He is a free reader and can read with expressions.

My feeling is - nothing ventured, nothing gained.
There is some fantastic verse available, and it is all the more enjoyable when read aloud...Think of the pervasive drumbeat in Hiawatha, the sound differences in the vessels starting with 'Quinquireme of Nineveh' and no I'm not suggesting either as texts for a 6 year old, just the thrill of the rhythm and the way the words work.

Do it and see how your 6 year old reacts!

Why not! Be prepared to explain a lot of vocab to start with if you choose diverse texts.

Not quite the same, but mine (as choristers) have been reading/chanting psalms since that age and I'd certainly suggest a bit of the king James bible for that. It's lovely language and actually they are aware of meaning almost by "osmosis" after a few years.

All of mine were traditionally given "Now we are six" book and had to recite it at their 6th birthday party :)

PS Not the whole book, just the title poem.

My DD has been doing Speech & Drama Lessons since she was 5 years old and reciting verse - for the end of school concerts and LAMDA exams.

Hasn't done her any harm.

Many thanks for all the info. I now just released that verse reading is a "proper" extra curricular activity. I also just locate a Lamda teacher nearby and will contact the teacher asap. -- As a foreigner, need a teacher to help DS start on this. maybe I also need to look into this for myself :-)
