Ok ok so the obvious answer is an actual piano, but since DD has only just started I don't want to have to find a piano until i know if she is sticking with it.

Are there any piano teachers around who can advise which keyboards might be sutable for practising at home? Preferably not too expensive. I can't ask DD's teacher as she has lessons during school time.

Thanks!

Get the biggest one (ie with the most octaves) that you can afford and preferably with weighted, full-size keys.
If this is your DD's only activity that involves reading music, then practising the note names with her is really useful (TWO pesky staves to master!)
Also, coordination exercises.
Good luck. Hope your DD enjoys her lessons :)

I bought an old wooden piano ,used until G6, then get a professional piano.I am going to give away the old one.
I think wooden piano is the best option for bigginers, even a old one, not yamaha keyboard (£200+)with touch sensitive keys or digitial piano(£700+).
They are really different.

FWIW I second curiousmind keyboards are totally different and should be played differently to a piano.

Thanks all. There do seem to often be pianos on ebay or freecycle near us, but the hassle of relocating one to our house always seems a bit much....

Should have got her learning something smaller like DD1's violin!

We have a digital piano (weighted keys and pedals) which suits our particular home at present, being able to turn the volume down or even use headphones is very useful especially when DH is playing. Dcs have absolutely no problem playing proper pianos elsewhere, in exams and competitions. We are only up to Grade 5 at present so we can review the situation if necessary later.

However when we were in your situation at the start, DS1 was learning on a keyboard for the first 3 months until we were sure he was going to stick with it.

have you considered renting a piano? I am not sure how expensive it would be.

pianomama · 15/06/2012 23:59

Renting is a good option.I'd say you could rent one for 35-40 a month to begin with. They will deliver and tune for the first time. And you can send it back after 6 month I think.

Keyboards are good for somebody who wants to play keyboard.

Pianos are acoustic instruments, the touch, the arcticulation required can not be repeated on the best keyboard , electric pianos or anything else.

Raspberry - please reconsider, G5 level needs a real piano with real strings and hammers ... Opps , no offence intended , feeling stressed and under the influance of a much needed night cup ..
