right height for the piano stool

Dd has just embarked on piano lessons and is completely addicted, playing all day long. I am a bit worried about her posture which is definitely not right. She is a bit hunched over and I remember at the first lesson with this teacher, she said something about the elbow and how the elbow has to be for the posture and the stool position to be right but I can't remember exactly what she said about it. I think I need to adjust the stool, especially if she is going to be glued to it all day long.

Could anyone tell me how you know that the stool is at the right height? She has a long upper body so I am thinking maybe I need to lower it

The elbows should be roughly at the same level as the keyboard while the shoulders are relaxed - the wrist should not bend upwards . If DD is young and her feet don't reach the floor, I suggest a footstool as well - makes big difference.

thank you very much, I'll have a look, I am sure it isn't right. If the wrist should not bend upwards, I take it that means the lower arm is in a straight line from the elbow (more or less) so not going up towards the wrist then the hand back down to the keys (which I think was the case).

just checked on youtube and found some good videos there on posture for the piano, so I understand now what you meant about the wrist.

I think the general idea is not to create tension anywhere in shoulders/arms/elbows/wrists/back/neck etc. That's why footstool (or box) is really important from the beginning for overall balance. Little pianist should look comfortable , without anything looking "angular". You see so many kids playing with wrists bent below the keyboard and it is really hard to correct bad habits later .Hope it helps :)
