We auditioned as late applicants last year so I'm not sure if the process is the same:

Accompanist practices all pieces with you for around ten minutes.
Head of JD and instrument specialist listens to pieces.
Accompanist leaves and they chat to child about musical ambitions, schools, experience etc.
Place is offered via post although we were told on the day because we were late applicants.

We didn't take up the place but are looking to get back in touch with them. RCM has a really nice atmosphere and is very unpretentious.

Thanks for that. How old is your child if you don't mind me asking? I presume the parent is not present in the room at all?

I take it as you were late applicants, there weren't loads of other people also auditioning on the day.

How long were you there for on the day?

It lasted about twenty minutes in total including two instruments and voice. No other parents, I wasn't in the room and my child was 10.

Thank you. Roll on audition day.

I went there...but it was over twenty years ago so I'm not sure my experiences will be valid Grin

Given your time again would you go?

Would you send your children?

You can only answer that as it depends on your personal circumstances and where you live.

Applying this year. don't really know much about it, but I suppose we will find out as the application process rolls on this month. Nowtasstrangeasfolk is your child applying this year, or are you thinking about it for another year ?

Nowtasstrangeasfolk · 01/03/2012 18:09

Applying this year.

My questions were to zgaze re given time again and sending children. Only because if parents have fond memories of the experience they are likely to say oh yes def do again or would send my children to have the same experience. And vice versa for negative experience.

I did it (years ago ...) my mum was outside the room for the audition but when the accompanist came out while I had my chat with the head and violin specialist she said "she's very good" so my mum was fairly confident I'd get in Grin

we were told on the day (not late applicants, maybe they've changed the process) - also did Academy and Guildhall, but preferred RCM so took up that place

It was great - I loved my time there, but hard work. Sadly none of my children is musical in the slightest, so I won't have the chance to send them ...

My dd is applying this year so I'll be following this thread with interest. Am particularly interested to hear of past/present pupils and how they've enjoyed it and/or coped with the work/practice/school work.

pianomama · 09/03/2012 14:53

My DS is applying this year as well - any pianists as first study? Been told repeatedly that piano/violin are the most competitive... Fingers crossed hopsyflopsy and Nowtass !!

pianomama · 09/03/2012 15:23

sorry + livinginlondon2 - good luck !
