Violin initial grade- are they really graded?

My ds is taking his initial violin exam in the next 3 weeks. (trinity guidhall). Am I right that they aren't really graded? And are just for the experience?

I was looking through a school's newsletter and they were congratulating some kids for getting distinctions and merits in initial violin.

I'm quite confused. My understanding was they just give very encouraging feedback. Do some kids fail it?

If it really is Initial Grade, then yes, they are graded, with marks, and it is possible to fail. If I remember correctly, three pieces are each marked out of 22, scales/exercises out of 14, and two supporting tests (out of sight reading, aural, improvisation and musical knowledge) out of 10 each. The criteria for distinction, merit, pass and fail are published on the Trinity Guildhall website.

I'm sure your ds's teacher has made sure he is ready, as he or she will want him to do well and feel confident in his first violin exam.

There is an exam which just gives encouraging feedback - the ABRSM Prep Test - but that's not what was being mentioned in the newsletter, as it's not marked, or called Initial.

Good luck to your ds.
