John Lewis or a school outfitter. You will get a reasonably-priced, plain coloured one. If your daughter wants spangles and glitter, however, you will need a second mortgage Grin

My DD's gym club also has second hand sales every so often, which is where most of the beginners get the fancy ones.

CroissantNeuf · 27/09/2011 08:42

haha, you could be me a couple of years ago when I posted a similar thread. They are stupidly expensive for such a small amount of material aren't they?

I second the idea of seeing if the local club does second hand ones, or try ebay or this place seem to be a bit more reasonable than some especially some of their special offers.

If I think of more I'll come back after the school run.

woolleybear · 27/09/2011 12:01

They are ridiculous aren't they! I have had a bit of luck and got them on ebay.

blowninonabreeze · 27/09/2011 12:06

Decathlon do them reasonably if there's one close to you?
They're plain though. Coming from a ballet background, I couldn't believe what gym leotards were like when I first saw them. All that glitter and stuff. My poor DDs have plain black cotton long sleeved ones. Although decathlon do also do the Lycra more shiny looking ones.
Thankfully DDs are too young and Tom boyish to have complained so far!

tibni · 27/09/2011 12:10

Try ebay or older girls at the club. New are incredibly expensive, over £40 for a decent brand in velour.

There is a real snobbery about leotards. DD used to compete and only milano long sleeved were considered acceptable (despite there being other equally rip off priced leotards out there)

You have reminded me I have a dozen of the things to get rid of. I took them to a boot sale but no one was prepared to even offer £5 so I thought I would ebay them - but I have never sold anything on ebay and have just never got round to it.

Anyway there is also the shorts issue - the girls in dd squad all insisted on matching shorts too! Beware about the cut. We once had competitions leotards that were far too high cut for children to wear and pants and shorts are only allowed at training.

Lisad- meet tibni- sounds like you should be pm-ing each other!

lisad123 · 27/09/2011 12:33

If anyone has some to sell I will happily pay for some.
I have two girls, aged 4 but fits 4-5 clothes. Other is 8 and very slim and more like 7-8 years.
They don't have to wear club kits but do need leotards for comp.
Will need club kit when they make squad! Confused
We have been lucky to find a team willing to take two SN girls and they love it.

dd club had children with SEN but ds (severe ASD, ADHD, SLD) never showed any interest . He did special olympics for a while but doesn't cope well when they go inside - sensory dysfunction.

If I can work how I will pm you with what I have here. It is my birthday tomorrow and dh is taking me a way for a couple of days so if I go quiet its because my surprise destination doesn't let me mumsnet Shock

stomping · 27/09/2011 12:47

Decathlon are usually good. My dd started in a ballet leotard which are usually quite cheap on ebay.

lisad123 · 27/09/2011 12:48

I can't pm from phone but of your on normal you is a pm poster button on right-hand just across from user name Grin

Have sent pm.

To be honest im a bit anxious. Childcare arrangements fell through and had to rearrange which isn't easy with ds. Have not even packed yet! I am guessing London for 2 nights and a show. I am on laptop writing detailed instructions - meds etc!

lisad123 · 27/09/2011 13:14

This is why I left dh at home when I went into hospital last week, even though I wanted him there. It's so hard to deal with SN kids and remember all you do to write a looonnnng list of dos and donts :)

It is, ds is 10 and this is only the 2nd time dh and I have both been away at the same time. It is the dc's uncle who is staying overnight (mid week so at school) and he does have the dc over for sleepovers so I know the dc will be alright but he is not used to all the detail - meds to taxi escort for afterschool outreach etc. I think dd will end up sorting the boys out!

MowlemB · 27/09/2011 20:28

At my daughter's gym there is a shop where they make them.

This is the link: www.geesactive.co.uk/

A normal lycra leotard (plain colour) with a diamante pattern on costs about £20 - £30 (depending on design, size etc...) I generally find them to be a lot cheaper than the main makes.

They're good quality too - Some of my daughter's leotards are now on my second daughter, so I've had them for 4 years. And my eldest is in squad on 11 hours a week, so they have been used :)

falasportugues · 08/10/2011 20:40

I also got fed up with paying a fortune for gymnastic leotards for my 7 year old so I set up my own company selling them if any of you are interested in a reasonably priced leotard I might be able to help.

startail · 20/10/2011 17:07

To be fair, DDs horribly expensive leotard has lasted really well, still fits, still looks nice and still has all it's spangles. So I'm less grr about the price than I might have been. Very Grr about DD1 who decide she was too old and gave up having hardly worn hersAngry

spiderpig8 · 26/10/2011 13:10

make sure you get one with dark sleeves like navy blue or black .it makes their lines look much cleaner for competitions.
