hi, our local David Lloyd has just massively put up the kids' membership rates to £37/mth for 5-13 year olds.

If you are a member of David Lloyd, can you tell me what the children's membership cost is, area and what they get for it.

thank you. i am having a battle and need ammunition!!

Sorry. Can't remember.
I think it is £28? But it may be going up for all I know

AnnoyingOrange · 09/03/2011 20:55
Shock

I left the DL a few yrs ago as I didn't want to pay silly money for the dc to have a swim now and again

amidaiwish · 10/03/2011 11:59

it's crazy isn't it.
we renewed last Jan 2010 and then it was £12.50 for each of the dcs. plus a further discount as we paid for the year bringing it down to £12. more than reasonable.

now due to a shift in the age brackets it has gone up to £37!!

just wondering whether this is standard for DL or if our club is taking the piss (it only became a david lloyd in the last couple of years)

Amida, I don't know how I missed this. When does £37/mnth take effect?

I think perhaps The Lensbury is looking more affordabe.

amidaiwish · 17/03/2011 11:04

yes, there has been a massive exodus.
Jan 2009 i paid for the year for the kids and it worked out £12.15/month
April 2010 they put it up to £20/month for 5-8 year olds
it is now £37/month for 5-13 year olds as they re-aligned the age breaks.

disgrace. loads of people have left. we are on the waiting list for the lensbury it is about 2 years for family membership at the moment (£11/mth for under 10's!)

we are putting pressure on the mgt to sort out the charge, esp for off peak members as it is still £37/month yet there are no kids activities during off peak hours!! It will be interesting to see how empty the kids tennis & swimming courses are next term as they have also cracked down on non members doing these paid for activities.

Quite a few of us are very cross about it and really trying to get them to look at it, most have just left though. shame.

Hmmm... who are all these people banding together in protest. £37 does sound outrageous. I just enrolled my 3 month old for £7.50 per month. Didn't realise I'm about to (or perhaps already do) pay £70 per month for my 6 and 8 year olds.

Although, even so, I'm unlikely to take a hike. I can use any David Lloyd and Lensbury can't compete with that.

However, a massive ripe I do have is increasing memberships whils ONE FRICKEN TREADMILL HAS A WORKING IPOD DOCK. Now THAT hacks me off.

(not to mention the food is shit)

amidaiwish · 17/03/2011 12:01

well me and another mum have had countless meetings with the membership manager schmuck.

now trying to get a meeting with the manager (James) next tuesday. wanna come?

i bet you are already paying it - check your DD!

once the meeting is arranged we will get together as many as possible. lots of st j's were/are members. lots have left to virgin active / lensbury.

we have a couple of mums from AC on the case too who are also mad.

I have sent you a private message.

£20 for 5-13 year olds.

For us, it's good value. They all go swimming at least twice a week every week. That means for each child, it's less than £3 per swim, and it costs more than that at the local pool which is (a) skanky and (b) not free for me and hubby. I wouldn't be happy if they put the price up to £37.50 each though.

houselikeashed · 22/03/2011 22:17

We left. Voted with our feet.
What annoyed me was that even though the membership is sky high - the swimming lessons are twice that of other local pools! Double whammy!

amidaiwish · 23/03/2011 10:03

thetasigmamum, which DL is that? Last April they put it up to £20, then realigned the age groups to £37.50. I would be ok with £20 too.

houselikeashed - the swimming lessons are pretty much the same price as everywhere else around here with a similar 1:3 or 4 ratio, tennis too. how much are the lessons? We pay £120/term.

That sounds about right for swimming. Other places near us are £65,with no membership fees!! but have 6-8 in a class. Our DL had 6, so not that different.
I miss the social aspect of DL, but not much else tbh. Certainly not the overpriced rubbish food!!
