Hi everybody

I am wondering what is average to pay for 30 minute private music lessons eg in piano, cello, trumpet etc.

Also are some instruments actually quite hard to find tutors for - such as Cello..............

My ds and dd are HomeEducated (long story, crummy school) so cant access music lessons as school. Given a choice would like to learn piano AND cello (Eeeek)

Id be glad to know what is usual!
:)

If anyone is looking for a music theory tutor in North London (Archway) I can highly recommend mine - Louise Langston. She teaches up to Grade 8 ABRSM & also teaches sight singing and rhythm reading. Full disclosure - she taught me, not my kids! However I know she has many school age students. Lessons £45 per hour. //www.learntoreadmusiclondon.co.uk.

I know this is old, but it might be noticed by people who are interested. My Dds classical singing teacher has told us this week that she has to raise the hourly fee from £36 to £40 to keep in line with the Musician's Union minimum rates.

I am interested - thanks for posting. I just had the bill from our teacher today - lessons have gone up to £21 per half hour. We're in the east midlands. I pay a lot more than friends I know.

I am a piano teacher. When I was a student I had many piano teachers. One of the best and most experienced one in the world used to charge around 75£ per hour. Can you figure out how much 75£ was in 2000? However it was a good investment because he changed my life as an artist!

I have found the lessons vary from around £15 per half hour to £28 - it depends on the level of the teacher and the location of lessons. If they are at the teachers house they can be less as they don't have the overheads. More important is how your child relates to the teacher - don't go on qualifications - watch the interaction between your child and the teacher. If they have children themselves they often relate better! I have also found that hiring an instrument works well - I used //www.musicalinstrumenthireco.com and was very pleased with them.

We are paying £22/40mins for piano - prep school in the south. I'm sure I could get it a bit cheaper outside school, but am paying for convenience....( weekly logistics bad enough)

I didn't see your post but were you advertising music lessons?
It says in the talk guidelines "we'll delete anyone's attempts to spam the boards with links, as a way of promoting their own product, services, survey or e-petition, as it annoys our members."
If it wasn't that you'd need to read the guidelines and see if it broke any others

I pay £69 a month for DS guitar 30 mins group session - started with three however just him at the moment again.

My DS2 I just paid £139 for piano lessons for the term through a council run scheme - so goes through school or local music centres. So 10 weeks and 20 mins a lesson

We are in Surrey

I paid £25 for half an hour and £45 for one hour.
£10 per half hour seems a pretty good deal.
However it depends on the education level of the teacher.
Sometimes you can also get very cheap lessons when being a trial student at universities.

My piano teacher (central London) charges £60 for an hour and £45 for half an hour - he comes to the house so allows for the faff of travelling.

Does the school take part of the money you charge?
