It will simply be for pleasure with no lessons taken. She is a tall 10 year old so do you think I should go for a full size guitar or 3/4.

I think 3/4 size ones are suitable up till the child is about 4 ft 10 or so. If she's any taller than that get a full size. Can you take her into a shop to try out both sizes?

dd has just turned 10 and we had a lesson last week, she tried both the 3/4 and the full but not all the 4/4 seem to have the same width of neck. Ours at home was too big, the one at the school was not.
Dd is on the tall side but her hands are quite small. (For violin she still has 3/4 but I'll get her a 4/4 guitar if she sticks with it)

Difficult when you want it to be a surprise but to try out some in a shop might be best

Thanks. She is a tall 9 year old - she has half size cello. May be I will try the full size( sorry for my ignorance that is 4/4 isnt it?) and can always exchange if she is struggling.ZZZenagain - May I ask you what guitar do you go for I had a look in Amazon yamaha is around 91 pounds(this is will be her birthday present normally she does not get such expensive presents but due to have an operation next week so will really cheer her up if it is worth it.I am willing to spend this amount of money if it is a good one)

have just seen today that dd has actually outgrown her 3/4 violin and will need a 4/4 one now, so maybe that is why the 4/4 guitar was right.

We are having a guitar lesson this afternoon. I'll ask which type of guitar the teacher recommends. He did mention yamaha last week come to think of it. I'll get back to you on that.

Hope the operaton isn't anything too drastic, poor little thing. Yes, a guitar is a lovely gift and there are such nice teach yourself books for dc these days with CD etc. I am sure musical as she is, that she'll enjoy teaching herself

ZZZenAgain · 01/11/2010 12:02

sorry yes 4/4 will be the full size. If she has 1/2 cello, not sure maybe a 4/4 guitar is a bit big but she'll grow into it. Could you go into a shop with a friend who has a dd about that age just to see what they advise and how big a difference it is? Thing is if she is just playing at home (not with regular lessons/practice), I don't know if it is worth your while buying an inbetween size. If she has a spurt, she'll have outgrown it and had little use out of it.

My son is a smallish 10 year old and has been playing my old acoustic guitar for about 1 year with no problem. I offered to buy him a 3/4 size one when he had astounded me by actually sticking at it and practising - but he prefers the full size one.

ZZZenAgain · 02/11/2010 10:14

sorry bit rushed but I spoke to the teacher yesterday, he said he had always found Yamaha to be fine for learners. However they are not concert guitars as such, you'd be looking at 1,500+++

So I think the Yamaha will be fine. As to size. He said the 4/4 was too big for dd. We tried it all lesson and he said she'd really need to get a smaller size. I am wondering if there is such a thing as 7/8

For you since dd is not having lessons and will practise just as and will she likes presumably, perhaps it wouldn't matter if it was on the biggish size. Sorry not to sure what to advise!

Thanks zzzenagain. Valuable advice. I am sure she will be excited - it is more for fun(better than guitar hero Smile)
