Hello. There are many threads over the internet relating to adopted people to Irish parents by my case is the opposite and I cannot find any answer to my query so HELP. My birth mother was born in England to an Irish born mother, my birth grandmother. I was adopted out of that family to English parents who changed my name upon my adoption to them. I have all the relevant birth death marriage and adoption certificates proving my line to my Irish born grandmother so my question is this.

AM I ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR ENTRY ONTO THE FBR IRELAND BASED ON MY IRISH BORN BIRTH GRANDMOTHER? I am hoping to get some positive replies based on previous cases like mine. Thanks

My understanding of it is that you are not eligible, unless your English born mother was registered as a foreign birth prior to your birth.

My understanding is that children of Irish born parents are automatically Irish citizens and don't need to be registered as foreign births. Only their children need to be

Actually I've just checked the website and it looks as though if your grandparent was Irish, you can apply.

In your shoes I'd ring the FBR line on 00353 1 568 3331 for further advice and info on your eligibility.

Adoption severes all ties, in almost all countries this also includes citizenship by descent as well. Legally speaking she was no longer your grandparent when the adoption order was granted. You likely need specialist advice from someone who deals with both adoption and immigration/citizenship services.

That does apply for inheritance but which is outside the remit of my question.

Thank you but I'm not a child of an irish born parent

My belief is yes, you can apply.

i applied for my kids a while back, and joined a few forums- while adoption isn’t relevant to us, there were quite a lot of threads asking the question.

if you can evidence that you are the grandchild of an Irish born citizen, then you are eligible for the FBR.

Thank you. That is my understanding and one on which I have applied. Sometimes a person needs to know of others that have had similar experiences and it's good to know success can be achieved. Thanks again

Yes. I was born and adopted in the UK to a woman born in the UK with an Irish mother and English father. I got my Irish passport.
