Seems another good reason not to vote Tory.

Among many!

a) It's unlikely that the EU would want another Swiss style arrangement - I believe that the one they have with the Swiss causes them enough headaches.

b) Tory MPs warned against a 'betrayal' of the 2016 referendum result. Former Cabinet Minister Jacob Rees-Mogg said the Conservatives are a 'Brexit party' and would risk becoming a 'non-Brexit party' if it agreed to 'unfettered' trade with the EU.
This is absolute tosh as usual. The Brexit mandate has been discharged and we are no longer in the EU. It's tough luck if they don't like the arrangements their Brexit cronies have made with both the EU and the rest of the World.

c) The sooner people wake up to the fact that the old Tory party is dead, and it's now a party of Brexit zealots the better. If the current party can be consigned to the dustbin of history, that will be to the good.

The Tories are wedded (atm) to Brexit, however, if they ever did U-Turn on it, would be a huge issue for Labour... who have been beyond weak on the issue, they 'd either have to oppose re joining (or trying too) the SM or themselves change, like the 1p tax cut.

Agree... EU don't want another Swiss style deal.

Tories dropping even further in the polls, following the budget, anything is possible if the country turns pro EU.....

Pretty much as soon as the Referendum result was announced it was clear that it would bring about the demise of the Conservative party in the long run, as it would destroy the economy and their credibility. Mind you, Labour hasn’t done much better in going along with it, but they can probably weather it and creep back into alignment with the EU.

Alexandra2001 · 21/11/2022 08:57

I don't understand Labours stance... they will never ever get favourable headlines from the likes of the Sun or Express etc so why worry about what they say?

They are digging a bloody great hole for themselves... especially if they put no to SM & CU in the manifesto.

I thik the stuff on a swiss deal was a bit of kit flying from the Tories.

It's quite amusing seeing the Tories waste a lot of energy (which then can't be used anywhere else) on a complete non-story like the non-possibility of a Swiss style deal. The ERG have been well and truly had. It's almost like they aren't very bright.

The biggest obstacle to a "Swiss style" deal, is that if it were to give the UK the same as Switzerland, but without (say) freedom of movement, then Switzerland would be knocking on the EUs door wanting the same.

Far more likely this "story" was run to allow the troublemakers Sunak will need to face to come into the open.

Or as if , so long as their off shore funds are not caught in the EU's increasingly sophisticated anti-tax avoidance strategies , they don't care about what happens the the country.

They continue to have sufficient funds to buy themselves out of a failing NHS and/or any failures in the education system. Why would they care about the rest of us so long as the bill for benefits can be kept as low as possible.

Unfortunately, this is true of the Tories in general.. Sunak isn't affected by the collapse of the uk economy...neither is May or Truss.. all extremely wealthy individuals.

The every shrinking ERG

The Conservative party can become whatever it wants to become. All it has to do is tell people that's what it is, and they'll believe it. Brexit was all Labour's fault really after all.
