Loss of EU care staff being replaced by unemployed

Justpassingtime1 · 25/01/2021 07:06

The Government has stated there should be no problem replacing
departing EU care staff with the many now unemployed Brits.
There is no question that the EU ones are leaving .The issue is whether
it will be so easy to get the unemployed to do the work.

Care workers doing home visiting need to be vetted. They need to be trustworthy and reliable and they need an inexhaustible supply of patience and empathy.

Being unemployed should not be the only pre-requisite for allowing someone into a vulnerable person's home.

As far as I know they always work in pairs, which minimises the risk of any harm or abuse occurring. I agree that they need to be caring and compassionate but they don’t need to be saints!

vodkaredbullgirl · 26/01/2021 22:56

Hmm I work with plenty of EU care staff, none are leaving care or this country.

The UKBA data must be wrong then

DamnUserName21 · 27/01/2021 13:55

Definitely carework is not for everyone. Unemployed or not, personality testing and probationary periods/shadowing to see how people do, would be/are useful in ascertaining who would be good in care roles.

Same.

I haven't encountered this mad rush to leave yet.

Double ups aren't the norm and yes they do need to be saints, or do you want anyone dragged off the streets looking after your parents?

Must be a regional thing because its extremely hard to get a care package for a vulnerable person.
UK is now giving up to £2000 for EU citizens to leave the UK.

An incredibly hardworking, responsible role that isn't given recognition, as you ve amply demonstrated.

UnityUnited · 27/01/2021 22:35

The ones that I have known have always worked in pairs. They have been kind and professional but not living saints.

Sometimeswinning · 06/02/2021 19:58

I work in care. Those from the eu are still here with no plans to leave. Care is so easy to get into. Why do you assume it's ever been any different? I've worked with the most awful british and eu workers! Those around me now are all amazing!

Emeraldshamrock · 08/02/2021 21:12

If the unemployed people wanted to work in care they'd have a job already there is plenty of work available.
They can't or shouldn't force people to work with vulnerable people unless the heart is in it.

Warning that affordable childcare system could be victim of post-Brexit arrangements

The UK's au pair childcare programme is at risk of disappearing as a result of new post-Brexit immigration rules, the industry trade association has warned.

An estimated 45,000 families in the UK, including many key workers such as doctors, nurses and police, rely on the longstanding au pair cultural exchange programme for affordable childcare.

But with the end of EU free movement this year, au pairs have been categorised as "skilled workers" under the UK's points-based immigration system alongside nannies and childcare workers, with new entrants needing to earn a minimum salary of £20,480 a year.

@Peregrina

You can imagine that with this Government waiving the requirement to have a DBS check would be one of their bright ideas. After all it's only the old, the sick and the disabled who need care, and we have already seen what the Government thinks of them.
That's a tad unfair given that the Govt have knackered the economy with restrictions and lockdowns just to protect the "old, sick and disabled" from catching covid!
Peregrina · 09/02/2021 21:25

They have knackered the economy and still not managed to protect the old, sick and disabled. This is a Government which only cares about people with money, and preferably white skinned.
