Buying Goods from EU - Extremely Confused

Applefruitcake · 08/01/2021 10:48

I've tried reading online about this including on the gov. Website and other sources, but I'm still extremely confused 😬

So, when we purchase goods from the EU (as an individual, not a business), what extra charges exactly are we expected to pay? And is there a certain threshold where you don't pay anything like it was before with non-EU imports?

Thank you in advance 💐

Import VAT and clearance fees go onto everything from everywhere now

Brexit is all about the sunny uplands

I bought something from Esprit (uk website) in December. The change on my credit card showed 'esprit ratingen deu'.
Does this mean it comes from Germany?
From now on will we have to pay extra when this is delivered - or will Esprit incorporate the extra cost into the headline price on the website?

EU websites will sell under EU terms.
The UK is no longer part of the EU so reverts to VAT and Clearance on entry as was the case pre 1988
anything any UK politician has told the press
is likely to be lies

There was a thread on this the other day which might be of help:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4127522-Tax-on-goods-from-EU-surely-not-correct

Not trying to discourage responses to yours, though.

BowlerHatPowerHat · 08/01/2021 20:56

Thanks listening but the website is a .co.uk so do you think custom charges etc will apply?

ListeningQuietly · 08/01/2021 21:01

bowler
it depends which warehouse fulfilled your order
in 2020 it could have been one of many in a seamless manner
not now

BowlerHatPowerHat · 08/01/2021 21:08

Thanks listening
What a mess! Feel sorry for all the small businesses having to deal with this.

ListeningQuietly · 08/01/2021 21:13

Bowler
The "deal" was the same one the EU offered in 2017
(the documents are time stamped)
What is happening now is EXACLY what was derided as project fear after the vote.

I admit to having FUCK ALL sympathy for
ANY
business owner who voted
For Brexit in 2016
Tory in 2017
Tory in 2019
as THIS IS WHAT THEY VOTED FOR
so own it

BowlerHatPowerHat · 08/01/2021 21:22

Agree with you listening
Did you ever watch the videos from (I think they were called) '3 men in a pub'? They explained stuff like this. But you are right, it was all just Project Fear.

ListeningQuietly · 08/01/2021 21:26

The 3 men are the mild version of me Grin

Except the UK, in an excellent example of "do they not know who we are?" thinking, have decided that non-UK companies must register for VAT in the UK and deduct UK VAT at source. Large companies or those with a big UK market will do so. Smaller companies won't bother.

William Shatner will no longer ship to the UK from his Star Trek memorabilia store.

ListeningQuietly · 08/01/2021 21:44

Ochon
There are lots of sides to that.
We are reverting back to pre 88
when US merchanise use to come in as the personal luggage of business folks because the customs rules were a PITA

In the early 90's there was a warehouse in Suffolk that packaged and "valued" a lot of merchandise
the owner of the warehouse was "the East India Company"
yes, that one

OchonAgusOchonO · 08/01/2021 21:48

@ListeningQuietly - I understand the logic of it but it's extremely ill-thought out.

ListeningQuietly · 08/01/2021 21:55

Sorry, I was reacting to the Shatner stuff which is wafer thin

OchonAgusOchonO · 08/01/2021 21:58

Yes, but I just find the Shatner one amusing Grin

@Applefruitcake
I had my first EU parcel today. Arrived from Germany. No different than when I purchased from the same company in November. Paid vat and delivery when I placed my order. Same as before.
Just check they have a vat number and all should be fine.

Applefruitcake · 28/01/2021 23:24

@Rulesdontapplytome

Thank you. I did ask the retailers I would usually shop with about their current procedures. It seems as though most are dealing with the customs / vat side of things themselves, so it is a lot less complicated than I initially thought.

@Applefruitcake
Just check they’re vat registered. I think that’s the important bit. All the horror stories I’m hearing of extra charges seem to be retailers that aren’t vat registered, resellers (eBay & Amazon), and gifts.
