Northern Ireland Brexit related supply problems

I don't know if there has been a thread about this already. I had a quick look there and couldn't see one, so apologies if I missed it.

I'm in N Ireland and there have been noticeable supply chain problems with supermarkets, although there is no evidence of panic buying. Apparently the paperwork for transporting goods from GB is so complex that even very experienced haulage firms are struggling with it.

This follows hot on the heels of loads of online companies announcing that they will no longer deliver here (albeit some have said it is a temporary measure).

I understand that there are initial teething problems, but are we potentially looking at long term price increases here? Extra red tape means increased costs doesn't it? N Ireland has a plentiful supply of chicken and potatoes and the like. But let's face it, we don't have the climate for a wide variety of food growing so a lot of it comes from elsewhere...

Surely not, the brexit bastards types said this would never happen Angry

Hopefully it will smooth out when businesses get used to things? But yes I would assume prices will rise due to the additional red tape.

I half cought a report on radio4 about a haulage company that had sent lorries to britain from NI and they were still mostly stuck over here.

The shelves weren't bare like this even at the height of panic buying in March.

My hubby is a lorry driver who transports stuff back from GB several times a week.
He rang tonight to say he is heading to the port and still doesn’t have the relevant code for his load and he won’t be able to carry the trailer without it. His company have been trying all afternoon to get a code but the site is jammed.
He is pretty pissed and it messes up their legal driving hours. He says he’s going to leave the trailer and bring the cab back so he doesn’t have to spend the weekend in Scotland
I think a couple of problems are getting the codes and the fact that every product must have a different form. The powers that be don’t realise that a half empty lorry doesn’t make money so companies often pick up last minute requests to carry extra pallets to make the journey more cost effective and environmentally friendly. If that last pallet doesn’t have a code the whole load can’t move
But the English don’t care I suspect

It will definitely put prices up I’m afraid. There are admin fees for all the customs paperwork, so every time a lorry crosses the Irish Sea, it costs the exporter more than it did in December. Those costs will be passed on

wellthatsunusual · 09/01/2021 07:55

That's just what one of the poorest regions of the UK needs, everything to cost far more than elsewhere.

I set up a new route for a client a couple of weeks ago. Previously the goods were flown into Dublin from UK and distributed throughout the island from there. They're now going by road/ferry to Belfast and distributed from there. Total cost including onward distribution has gone from around £600 per day to around £1,400.

No problems at all with 'paperwork' though and no problems reported (to me) of the site being too 'jammed' to issue a GMR.

The goods are mechanical spares rather than foodstuffs, so it's a little simpler.

This pisses me off so much because we didn't even vote for Brexit, as a whole. I know it was close, but overall this region voted to remain. And as for the DUP who were so keen to support it without apparent giving any consideration to how badly it would affect their constituents...

Brexit was never going to work for NI. We were always going to end up with an issue with either a border on the land or on the sea. Both ways breach the GFA and this is why. We either are going to be separated from ROI or GB.
We can’t get goods in , suppliers don’t want to send stuff here so we are significantly worse off. Fruit and veg is spoiling before it gets here.
Just the English Brexit voters effing us up again

yeOldeTrout · 09/01/2021 14:06

Sorry OP, yes long term price increases predicted for all.

mummyof2boys30 · 11/01/2021 19:10

Yip I work in retail and most of our fresh/frozen lines cancelled today. We are a small local store. Took me 4 supermarkets to get what I needed last week and we are meant to be staying at home... Unfortunately we have to eat so more travel than what should be happening

wellthatsunusual · 11/01/2021 20:31

I was in a big supermarket today and there were whole sections that were entirely empty. There was only about a tenth of the fruit and vegetables that there would normally be. And a shortage of bread, except for local brands like Genesis.

the lovely Priti Patel joked about starving out the Irish
but it turns out to be those with UK passports who are being screwed by her decisions Sad

mumtobe9 · 11/01/2021 21:08

I am hoping that in the future more companies will bring their goods from Ireland and the EU directly, thus avoiding GB. But i agree, we had finally achieved peace in NI, we were relatively well (considering) and now, some English nationalistic bulls**t brings this to an end. I used to have arguments with a Scottish friend who wants independence: why do you want independence, what great things could you have as an independent country that you don’t have now??
Well, now I surprise myself agreeing with her and wishing for a referendum to take place as GB will soon be a fiscal paradise that suits the rich and corrupt.

nicky2512 · 11/01/2021 21:12

My Asda delivery today was missing a fair bit of fruit and there was no fruit juice.
I have tinned stuff I can use but that’s all we need if it’s going to be long term.

DioneTheDiabolist · 11/01/2021 21:41

It's shit. I've been unable to get a few of my staples and it's going to be like this for a while.Sad
