EU postage and customs stickers

After 1st Jan all parcels to the EU from the UK will need customs stickers.

I have to send a couple of parcels out today (and almist certainly more before 1st Jan). With the current Covid shit show & Christmas holiday it is possible that these parcels could stay UK-side in the Royal Mail until after 1st Jan.

Is the customs requirement based on the posting date OR the date the item leaves the UK (or even the datte it arrives in the destimation country?

Anyone know?

And apologies for all the fat-fingered typos above Shock.

This doesn’t answer your question, but a friend in France trying to post a small packet to me (in the UK) from her local Post Office found things were already a lot more difficult there - a form to fill in with many details including recipient’s phone number, and the system no longer recognises UK postcodes. She had to queue for counter staff.

My post office yesterday told me they are not accepting parcels to Europe. I post worldwide and luckily that say didn’t have any eu parcels

quiteathome · 22/12/2020 07:40

I thought it was in the news that post was not going at the moment. Due to the travel ban. I would probably wait to post if you can

A lot of post and parcel services aren't working at the moment. I'd hold fire.

If you regularly post to Europe you can get a pack of customs forms, I have them for the USA. Very simple to do. What the unknown is, is the max shipment before duty kicks in

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 22/12/2020 10:32

Thanks all - I already have stocks of customs forms and am very familiar with filling them in (I send worldwide regularly).

I need to go to the P.O. today anyway so I'll see if they know the answer.

Do you know if this means that people in the EU (me!) will have to pay customs charges on parcels from the UK even if they were posted before the end of the year? Our post is taking ages at the moment and I ordered some things a while ago that haven't arrived yet.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 22/12/2020 11:51

@Sometimesonly

That's exactly the question I'm asking...

Piss-poor UK Government documentation doesn't make this clear.

Austria are no longer accepting post to the UK
as they know that it will not arrive before the 31st.

Technically if you have proof of posting before the 31st
then it should go through the system as an EU package
BUT
with the Channel closed I suspect post offices will be wary.

From 1st Jan then UK parcels to and from the EU will be just like those from the USA and other far flung countries

  • customs declarations
  • import clearance charges
  • import VAT and duty
  • DELAYS

Ah well - took parcels to my PO today and the EU ones were not accepted. (They were yesterday).

PO leaflet says all parcels from 29th Dec need a customs form - so that implies entry to Europe rather than departure from UK?

Anything crossing the EU boundary
in either direction
is in limbo from 1st Jan
because nobody yet knows what Customs rules to apply

Another Brexit dividend!

Bodoni · 22/12/2020 15:08

I had this from Amazon in early December:

'As you have placed an order on Amazon.co.uk and selected an EU delivery address in the past, we wanted to let you know that from 1 January 2021, when the Brexit transition period ends, you’ll see some changes when you shop on Amazon.co.uk and select an EU delivery address. These changes could include:

  • VAT (or the regional equivalent, if applicable, ... being due in the country of delivery, or your package may be subject to customs duties, taxes and fees (“Import Fees”)
  • the collection of VAT, or an estimation of Import Fees ..., which may result in a price change at checkout.'

I don't yet know if this applies if I order from Amazon.fr or Amazon.de

If you order from a French supplier for delivery to a French address then its all inside the EU

if either party is in the UK
its all up in the air

Thanks LQ. I saw a previous order for a UK children's book to be delivered in France was actually supplied from a French warehouse, so that might work OK.
