Call me an ostrich... I've really not been paying attention to this.

Give me a crib sheet, what do I need to know?

Work 4/5 days in design in construction business. No imports/exports. Completed a Brexit impact form for a developer Client. None of the questions were pertinent to what we do. Financial crisis in 2008 only hit us late 2011 so I'm expecting a possible delay this around. But what else?

DS in high school. Mortgage. Single mum.

Be gentle.

Try reading Martin Lewis’s blog on this, it’s very informative about the realistic impact

Construction industry only in U.K.? Do you sell your professional services to EU or expect the materials to come from EU?

I don’t understand how you don’t deal with import or export, tbh. I’m a building engineer in consultancy- large company. My specialty is in a part of buildings which is 100% imported, mostly from Germany, Italy, or Austria. AFAIK most of what I see in buildings is imported, with the exception of concrete (although it includes so many additives I’ve no idea where they come from) and some mineral wool. In my industry nobody seems to know what the import tariff would be in case if no deal, as it includes multiple components and materials, each with a different rate. From the professional aspect: mutual recognition of professions like engineers and architects ceases. If you sell your professional service in Europe (ie you’re designing a building in a EU country or you’re inspecting a factory in EU) you need to check the rules of each 27 countries as some might not kick a fuss but others might say you can’t do the service of an engineer (ie) if you’re not actually chartered in Eu. Even travelling there for work on a professional capacity might raise questions (going for meetings- ok. Going for inspections- not so sure)

Considering the % of architects already made redundant by Covid, the fact that tons of office space is empty and will stay empty for a while, retail is in terrible shape, I think the construction industry for anything that’s not residential will feel a hit pretty soon. Residential- don’t know. But you need money to change house, and if prices drop then people don’t sell and therefore don’t buy...

You cross your arms across your chest like an "X" and cry out "NO DEAL!" and the audience roars with approval.

HTH.

move here.... there are tower blocks going up everywhere. absolutely loads of them.

cherin · 11/12/2020 20:08

These tower blocks have been in design for 5-6 years at the very least. For most, the process started even earlier.

Off to find Martin Lewis. You are probably right about delayed impact OP

Crapbuttrue · 12/12/2020 08:36

Thanks for this.

Yes MSE is pretty good I hadn't thought of looking there.

@cherin not directly connected to import/export as it's a service we provide, no European staff, small company but I expect any impact on the construction industry as a whole will filter through to us eventually. The only architects I know that were made redundant during lockdown have been re-employed by the same company. Yes, I think the impact of empty office space is really interesting. It's going to change the landscape of our cities no doubt. And also residential. People will want additional space/rooms for wfh and outdoor space be that gardens or generous balconies. All those boxy residential high rise, not great for mental health if there aren't the internal/external community facilities to make them sustainable.

On a personal level though I am not what you would call a prepper. Did a bit of panic buying first lockdown (not bulk buying but just getting random frozen, tinned stuff I wouldn't get normally).

I'll have a look at MSE to see what I need to think about domestically.

@PicsInRed do I need to have crazy hair and a wild gleam in my eye as I do this?
