Why are we no more informed about what will be the reality after 31 dec?

I can't believe the lack of information so close to the exit date. Is it really acceptable that the government has left it this late? How are small businesses meant to plan efficiently? There are so many 'what if's'

Because the UK Government are incompetent

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 17/11/2020 17:23

Why are the media not doing more to question the government on this? There is plenty on Covid understandably why not on Brexit?

Because the people who own the newspapers have skin in the game for disaster capitalism

NotAKaren · 17/11/2020 17:30

Because spelling out the reality would stretch even this governments ability to spin Brexit as a positive. Hence the turmoil in Downing Street. Just saying something is world beating doesn't make it so.

raskolnikova · 17/11/2020 17:34

Yes, it's insane.

Tolleshunt · 17/11/2020 17:36

Maybe a D notice was put out about Brexit, as it was for Covid?

Or could just be that most of the media push the Tory agenda and don’t want to frighten the horses just yet. And yes, many of those who own the media organisations will have invested in the UK suffering a financial shock and won’t want to jeopardise the killing they hope to make.

TicTacTwo · 17/11/2020 17:40

Because people would cry Project Fear/Remoaner etc
Or they'd complain that the media were scaremongering and should be telling readers about the positives (which Remainers have been waiting years to hear about) It seems that the £350m have gone to friends of the Tories rather than the NHS so that's not it Confused

Most importantly the owners of newspapers are the very people who'll know how to make money out of this. They want their money in the bank first

Neolara · 17/11/2020 17:43

We're not more informed because nothing has yet been decided. Nobody yet knows whether there will be a deal or not and the deal (or non deal) will be the first step in clarifying what needs to happen. And we haven't got a deal because what we want is fundamentally incompatible with what the EU wants, and currently neither side wants to blink first. Boris was probably waiting for results of US election to see whether no deal was worth a punt.

But yes, I completely agree that not have have achieved some clarity by now is exceptionally unhelpful for lots and lots or businesses.

TicTacTwo · 17/11/2020 17:51

I keep on seeing online ads for this

www.gov.uk/transition

badpuma · 17/11/2020 17:53

I tried that link and it suggested that I subscribe to email updates because they don't know what the position is at the moment, that's helpful with 6 weeks to go.

ListeningQuietly · 17/11/2020 18:02

TicTacTwo
The UK Gov Transition ads are getting rather roasted by business owners on Linkedin Grin

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 18/11/2020 09:27

Neolara That's exactly my point, why are the community via the media not questioning the government as to why there are not any decisions as yet?

This will impact the day to day lives of many people, and hugely impact small & medium businesses and how they operate.

Is the government hiding behind covid and hoping that no one notices we go into January with no plan, no decisions and no idea of how we will operate as a country ?

The media who did suggest that Brexit wasn't going to be a walk in the park are probably not wanting to be seen to be saying I told you so just yet. I mean, it's been said thousands of times. It won't change anything

The only thing we can do is bunker down and give the Brexit people a chance to prove themselves , and prove us all wrong

I just hope there is a secret group of remainere with an action plan to pick up the pieces
I fear there is just farage waiting to do a coup

bellinisurge · 18/11/2020 11:11

For the first time I saw the Reality Check guy on the BBC and thought "WTF?". He said some shit about there not being time to get a deal sorted properly and I was aghast.
Wonder if there is a D Notice type thing?

Handsnotwands · 18/11/2020 11:29

It’s not just small businesses :( we are a major funding body, on behalf of the government, who’s entire model is built around state aid regulation. We’ve no clue what will happen. Just that EVERYTHING we do will need to charge, just not how 🤷🏼‍♀️ it’s a fucking shit show

SuperbGorgonzola · 18/11/2020 11:36

I think there are things there implicitly. My initial thought about the electric cars announcement was that it was a gesture to win favour from Biden to try and make a trade deal more likely.

I wondered if Cummings going last week was an indication that things were afoot; either that we were looking likely to make a deal that he doesn't support, or that it's going to a shit storm and he's fleeing the ship.

Good Friday Agreement and fish has been talked about a lot lately.

I think it's getting to the wire on the talks (has been for a while) and one of them needs to blink first as it's not doing anyone any good.

SuperbGorgonzola · 18/11/2020 11:40

Also, the Brexiteers I think have swallowed the line that a No Deal is a perfectly acceptable outcome and nothing to fear, in fact something to be welcomed.

Remainers perhaps recognise that even the deal that is close to completion is still poorer than membership of the EU, so can't stomach getting behind it; maybe hoping for an extension.

The deal is possibly seen a seen as a compromise which doesn't really please anyone.

HollowTalk · 18/11/2020 11:45

I'm so glad others are thinking the same things as me. It's incredible how little we know about what will happen. I can't imagine how frustrating it is for businesses.

I can't understand why, last March, Boris didn't ask Europe for an extension, given that a pandemic is not the best time to be discussing things like that.

isitsnowingyet · 19/11/2020 07:05

How many more times will there be an extension?

It feels like this will be a 7th or 8th extension, although I really have not a clue

CherryPavlova · 19/11/2020 07:11

I’m trying to think of a three word strapline bit struggling to come up with anything remotely printable.

NotAKaren · 19/11/2020 07:46

There has been quite a lot recently from businesses, particularly haulage firms and logistics making it clear that the customs/ borders/ ports are not prepared, businesses are not prepared largely because they don't know what they have to prepare for despite the fact government adverts. We have no remaining warehouse space because of PPE stockpiles and retailers left with lots of unsold stock or using them for online sales. Our reliance of supply chains from Europe is about to be severely tested and given that the supermarkets were emptied over a few days pre lockdown I think we all know this could be a real disaster.

mpsw · 19/11/2020 08:18

Maybe a D notice was put out about Brexit, as it was for Covid?

These are not topics which would be subject to the D notice agreements (which pertain to military security and intelligence matters) and which is entirely voluntary - it sets out the standards between the press and the government about how they report military oersted NHS and similar "I counted them out and I counted them back" etc

If the government wishes to suppress anything else, it needs to use injunctions. Is that what you think is happening?

Rollingdragon · 19/11/2020 08:26

I am finding the silence on this really quite bizarre! We now have 6 weeks, with Christmas in the middle of it, until the deadline. Even if they agreed a great deal today I don't think there would be time for the necessary plans to be put in place, and yet no one is making a fuss. I watched PMQ's yesterday, and Brexit was barely mentioned. Its almost as if it is being ignored in the hope it'll just go away.

ListeningQuietly · 19/11/2020 09:16

Every time a minister tries to reassure us about how well Brexit will go, they cock up
so they have been told to say nothing
they just have to believe

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 19/11/2020 09:53

Rollingdragon I agree, its just like we will roll into 2021 and then everyone will be up in arms saying why wasn't more done etc etc.

Media seems to be just reporting on what has happened not talking about things in advance and prompting further news, or debates, announcements or questioning the total lack of 'firm' guidance for everyone as we move from the EU formally and officially.

I can't see them extending it I think time for that has well sailed.
