Swapping driving licence

Morning all
I have been back in the UK for nearly a year. I currently have an EU photocard driving licence (passed my test in the UK, my original licence was sent to DVLA and swapped for an EU one when I lived in Europe)
I will now be staying here in the UK...do I have to swap back again, have any of you done it, how long do I have to do it?
Many thanks in advance Flowers

Have you used this tool?

www.gov.uk/driving-nongb-licence

X-post - yes, just went onto it.
If I have understood correctly I pay 43 pounds and do a D1 form and can have a UK one.
But DVLA link says no forms atm because of Covid.
It also states that I can drive on my EU one until I am 70.
So...have I understood correctly that Brexit has nil effect on my current driving licence?
Sorry if I am being ignorant Brew Cake

Oh, your link was same but different - still says I can keep my EU one until I am 70. So I don't need to spend 43 pounds just now - I am worrying unnecessarily I guess because I was told photo requirements for UK ones involve a 1000 pounds fine if your photo is not up to date.
So you renew them every ten years in the UK?

My driving licence was produced in May 2012 so the photo is eight years old - does that mean I need to swap it for a UK one with updated photo by May 2022 then?

Thanks again for your help Flowers

Aargh! Am very confused.
If driving in Europe (I won't be but never say never) a UK licence would only be valid until January 2021.
But I have an EU one without a 'runs out on' date.
Which is valid here until I am 70.
So...it would make sense to keep my EU one in any case?
but UK has 10 year photo rules. I cannot find the equivalent renewal photo rule in the country I was in.
Any thoughts? I am guessing renewing it before May 2022 would be a solution but if keeping it meant I could drive abroad on it without problems here or there then I'd obviously keep it.
Except there's the current photo loophole, will it not apply to an EU one?

I'm no expert, but I think as far as the UK is concerned, your licence is valid until you are 70, whereas the card itself needs to be renewed every 10 years. Once you are 70, you have to apply for a new licence every 3 years.

FaiIWorseAgain · 07/08/2020 11:07

Yes, the UK is every 10 years. The EU one is every 15 but as mine was done earlier, is officially valid until 2033.
Except it has an 8 year old photo on it already.
So was curious as to whether I would be fined 1000 pounds or not, if it is an out-of-date pic but not invalid for EU law.
Thanks btw Flowers

My interpretation is that you will be fine keeping your licence from an EU country as long as you comply with the conditions in the country that issued it. If that means it is valid until 2033, then fine.

The ten year expiry only applies to UK issued photocard licences.

FaiIWorseAgain · 07/08/2020 11:42

Thank you. So I could keep it until 2032 then swap it then I guess.
It is unlikely but not impossible that I would drive in Europe between now and then.
That said, will Bojo keep the EU licences are valid here rule, if EU after next January requires x,y,z on top of an English one? Could end up being tit-for-tat or end up costing more than 43 pounds in the long run.
Hands are tied until D1 form is available in any case - unless I can get one from the post office. I could ring the DVLA direct I guess, just to hear it all confirmed by the horse's mouth.
Thanks Brew Cake

DVLA have huge backlog. Give them a call & then call again. Take details of who you spoke to & date. We were given 3 different pieces of advice before we could tax the car (special circumstances), hence my suggestion.

totallyyesno · 13/08/2020 11:49

Depending on where your licence is from, I don't think you can keep it if you are no longer resident at the address it's registered at.

Cailleach1 · 20/08/2020 14:42

If EU countries, from Jan 2021, are not recognising the UK driving licence in the same way as they recognise those of member states, I would be amazed if the UK did not implement something similar.

I think details/advice on the website of some UK agencies do not fully reflect the reality of the situation.

I second speaking to someone from DVLA. Hoping it wouldn't be too vague.

In Germany they have been urging Brits to get it changed ASAP. I suggest you make a move soon, unless official guidance is available.
