What's happening with brexit?

It seems to have (rightly) faded into the background. Is it just on hold or are things expected to carry on as normal as per the schedule? Is no deal even more likely because no one has been able to work on getting a deal due to Covid-19?

Government target last time they were asked is still very much to leave as per the original schedule.
I can't see it happening though.

EU politely enquired and were told to fuck off, we've left and don't want an extension.

Brexit looms very large but silent
a bit like a heron in a clear sky

SistemaAddict · 22/04/2020 21:32

More like a vulture circling

Vultures are loud and smelly, people notice them.
Herons look insubstantial until they come in low
and then they are nearly as big as kites

have been enjoying bird spotting while out and about

I thought it was business as usual - we are going to leave, but are arguing over which bits we can cherry pick, and even the Germans are getting fed up.

My only experience of herons is canal and river walks and having them fly off repeatedly just as you get close to them only to land a hundred yards ahead. You never quite reach them and they spend a lot of time and energy flying off every time you get close.

It's on schedule, with David Frost acting as the UK's chief negotiator and he is the perfect man for the job.

ICouldHaveBeenAContender · 29/04/2020 08:19

Rain, why do you say Frost is the 'perfect man' for the job? I know nothing about him.

I think we will just muddle along, then wake up to find we are out with no deal and nothing has been organised.

Zezet · 29/04/2020 08:33

Basically the process has been moving on via telecommunication, but there have been delays as both the EU negotiator and the UK PM have been out with COVID19.

Right now we're in a (relatively smooth) transition period which lasts until December 2020. If we want that to last longer, we have to decide so by June. The UK has made it clear they don't want to.

Which means everyone has until December to figure it out. The EU keeps pushing for progress to be made, whereas the UK only wants to make progress on certain areas and drags its feet on others. EU not happy with that cherry-picking approach. The UK says everything is on track, the EU disagrees. I guess you coudl say it's on track if you are happy to not have a good deal at the end.

Also, most of the EU is just getting fed up with the sshw and, being distracted now by corona, have even less time and patience for the constant pleading with the UK to get somewhere. So I guess we can expect that to go even worse.

The Great Global Depression will dwarf any Brexit repercussions, so I expect it'll all happen on current timelines and we'll get through the GGD in one lump of misery, emerging (eventually) at the other end with itnall dine.

Brexit -
A Bad idea, Badly planned for and Badly executed.
And now heading for a Bad result.
Wots new 😳

Peregrina · 29/04/2020 18:30

Well, given the mess that the USA is likely to be in as a result of Trump's handling of the corona virus, you have to wonder how good the trade deals with the USA are likely to be.

OhhhPeee · 29/04/2020 18:35

What is really annoying now is that we will never get the answer about the impact of Brexit. Years of arguments, predictions that the country would boom or bust, are all moot because the whole thing will be eclipsed by the gigantic global recession that will be triggered by C-19 so the true impact will never be known.

1066vegan · 29/04/2020 18:48

From what I've read, we seem to be heading for a disastrous no-deal Brexit.

TheABC · 05/05/2020 14:51

It's going to be no-deal. Johnson wants to offer us up on a platter for the US. Wow, really looking forward to following their lead on food standards, employment rights and healthcare access.

But that does not matter as long as a chose few get rich (er).
