First proper positive from Brexit.

The whole VAT system needs an overhaul.

scaevola · 08/03/2020 16:33

Agree, but I really hope the overhaul is done with considerable planning. This isn't something where I would want to see a future omnishambles.

A new name wouid help - to distance it from VAT, and make it clear it is a consumption tax, not the 'luxury' tax (which it never has been, though it's been a very persistent myth)

vikkimoog · 08/03/2020 16:37

Anything to say about the UK leaving the EU Aviation Safety Regulator
not on a thread about tampon tax, no Confused

VAT is not a luxury tax, it's a general consumption tax. [] And if not in EU we a) might never have had it at all, and

VAT replaced purchase tax when we joined the EEC. So that's another lie nailed ...

jasjas1973 · 08/03/2020 17:50

Why is the govt going to overhaul VAT ? the far bigger tax to address is council tax and tbh with brexit and coronavirus to deal with, both potentially hugely expensive, i can only see ALL taxes going up.

So make the most of those few pence to be saved.

DGRossetti · 08/03/2020 17:53

Why is the govt going to overhaul VAT ?

Presumably rich people are paying too much.

Well, ALL taxes the poor can't evade obviously. Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Maybe a new 100% tax on wheelchairs, white sticks, and diarrhoea medicine ?

I thought the thread was about Brexit positives.

JemimaPuddleCat · 08/03/2020 18:02

@RancidOldHag Sorry, I hadn't realised they were already exempt from tax, as they are still so expensive (and so little choice, but that's another thread entirely 😉)

Mockerswithnoknockers · 08/03/2020 18:13

So, a pack from Asda comes down from 84p to 80p

Almost certainly not. That is not how pricing works.

The extra paperwork resulting from Brexit is going to put up the price of most things, be they made in the Eu or made of things that come from the EU.

ragged · 08/03/2020 18:57

I use a reuseable cup, and the extra cost was always miniscule for most anyway, so I don't care, however this is rather compelling, too:

The rules in the EU were changed in 2018 thanks to pressure in 2016 from the UK. As of january 2022 member countries of the EU can choose whether to levy a tax on feminine hygene products. So an advantage of 1 year - and proof that the UK did have a say in what happens in the EU.

Mockerswithnoknockers · 11/03/2020 16:55

So 20% VAT on Ebooks is abolished, and do you know what, 99p Kindle offers aren't coming down to 79p.

It's from December 1st ....
