Not right now, as I know nothing changes till next year, but as part of the Withdrawal Agreement?
The Backstop was such a massive sticking point for so long, what was decided in the end? And how will the plan affect the Good Friday Agreement? I've got to a point where I have no idea what's happening so it would be great if someone could explain it to me! (I'm in England, btw)

To clarify - I went to one booth and ex to another booth, so we both got different security people checking. though he does have a dodgy look about him lol

Which EU rules say you cannot trade with the rest of the world ?

You're just being a dick now. You know full well that the EU has rules on standards and that imports from the rest of the world have to comply with those standards.

JustonTime · 01/02/2020 18:13

Oh, glad to hear you're Irish - I'd have been mightily ashamed if a Swede knew more about my own country than I did!

ListeningQuietly · 01/02/2020 18:15

Chocolate
Sweden might have the resources to check every parcel that comes in from around the world, the UK most certainly does not.

Individuals shop online from all over and get stuff delivered
to France, to Germany, to Spain, to Austria, to Italy you name it

Importers have to comply
and resellers have to comply
but individuals buy all sorts of strange things

We live in France, but often travel to Ireland through the U.K. , arriving in Rosslare in a French registered car.
We are always stopped on entry to Ireland (and sometimes on return to the U.K. ) and asked where we’re from. Our passports are never asked for though. For information, both my DH and I were born in the U.K., but I’m of Irish descent and my husband of Indian.

WheresMyChocolate · 01/02/2020 18:16

JustonTime I was travelling from Dublin to Holyhead one time on the coach. On the way there it drove straight on/off the ferry. On the way back we all had to get off and go through security. The guy sitting next to me was absolutely shit faced. He could barely walk he was so drunk. The security guy asked him for ID and he pointed at the mirror behind the desk and said 'that's me'. The security guy burst out laughing and waved him through. I had no ID but thankfully didn't get stopped.

It is slightly different in ROI. There are passport checks no matter where you are from, but it doesn't stop the CTA either.

Just saying that the UK seems to observe the CTA with NO checks for Irish originating passengers. Well that is my experience anyway. Guessing they have more manpower or something in Border Control for profiling or something.. I love entering UK as an Irish passport holder with no issue.

But when I land back in Ireland it is full on. Got to go through the EU line.

But once the passport is valid it is a simple enough procedure to enter ROI and will be the same for EU country residents post Brexit too.

JustonTime · 01/02/2020 18:17

I wonder will that all change now Pandmumium post Brexit?

SpecLosers · 01/02/2020 18:19

Just to say, Ferries seem have fewer controls between ROI/UK and vice versa. I was talking about flying in and out.

JustonTime · 01/02/2020 18:21

Ryanair you need a passport to fly between Ireland and England. Aer Lingus allows a drivers licence.

JustonTime · 01/02/2020 18:23

I find the ferry to be a far less stressful way to travel (well in the summer months anyway, when there are no cancelled sailings). Flights are stressful to me. So many blooming rules and regulations.

ListeningQuietly · 01/02/2020 18:24

Getting the Ferry from Wales to Dublin .... UK Customs
Do you have a penknife in your possession
No, we have a sodding great fully laden estate car Hmm

JustonTime · 01/02/2020 18:25

I've never flown outside of the EU and it's about 12 years since I did more than travel between Ireland and England. So, I'm not an experienced flyer by any means, so I probably wouldn't know the difference between immigration or just security.

JustonTime · 01/02/2020 18:26

@ListeningQuietly I'd have said, 'well we brought a few steak knives with us if that's any use to you?' Lol.

WheresMyChocolate · 01/02/2020 18:27

I used to enjoy the ferry. Then I made the mistake of taking it in November. I genuinely thought we were going to die. The only way to get around was to crawl as it was impossible to stand. It was years before I'd get on a ferry again.

JustonTime · 01/02/2020 18:32

I think I have sea legs. I absolutely love the ferry especially when it gets a bit wobbly. I spend a lot of time on deck taking in the fresh air smoking and just enjoying the ferocity and beauty of the sea. I love it. Flying? Not so much. Like sardines in a can. Stress, stress, stress.
It's a far superior way to travel in my view!
Chocolate - you could limit yourself to the seacat (kind of hovers rather tan a boat) as they only travel when sea is calm. Risk though is that sailings will be cancelled.

WheresMyChocolate · 01/02/2020 18:34

I don't mind a it a bit choppy. But this one time was horrendous. All the external doors were locked because if you went on deck, you'd die.

JustonTime · 01/02/2020 18:34

I remember my first ever flight. I was the ripe old age of 19! At check-in, the attendant asked 'did you pack your bags yourself?' What did I reply? 'Well Mammy helped'. PMSL. I don't know whether she wanted to cry, laugh or roll her eyes. Then she clarified 'do you know everything that's packed in there?' Ah the innocence.

JustonTime · 01/02/2020 18:35

Oh that doesn't sound good Chocolate! I'd have been planting myself firmly in the bar in that case!

JustonTime · 01/02/2020 18:39

This video is me when flying. I feel so clueless

It’s be much easier to go through the scanner. It might save having to play the which items of clothing do I need to remove and which items do I need to take out of my bag game when you go through security.
