Remainers-have you stockpiled to insure against the possibility of no deal?

Dds have told me that their dad has nothing extra in at all. There's 10 of them in the house and several animals. They voted remain. I realise that not all remainers will have a food and essential supplies buffer but surely if you have a big family then you'd want to ensure you have enough food even for a few days if things go to worst case scenario? I can understand a single person or couple not stashing but surely when you have kids, and so many of them, it's vital to make sure you can feed them? The dds are starving whenever they come back from there as it is so hope that there are no shortages because he will struggle to feed them. They eat me out of house and home here so I'm worried they'll potentially go hungry there.
Joint household income of around £70K so not short of money before anyone suggests they might not be able to afford to.

Lots of Leavers are on low incomes so won't have the money to stock pile

Trewser · 28/10/2019 07:41

It's slightly nuts to be worrying about your exs Brexit stash!

I did have a small stash but we are eating it. I'm trying to save money instead.

MarchionessOfCholmondeley · 28/10/2019 07:58

Yes, we have a stash here. Bread flour, Rice, pasta, lentils, tinned tomatoes and beans, spices, porridge oats and uht milk.

We also have several months supply of toilet roll.

Was shocked at Richard Littlejohn's witterings in the fail a couple of weeks back. Hs said everyone would be "fine" with a post-Brexit shortage of loo rolls - everyone could go back to using newspaper like they did in the olden times. He neglected to consider if there isn't paper for big roll where the fuck the newspaper was going to come from?

The article was followed by comments from thousands of rabid brexiteers vociferously claiming yes, they did indeed know exactly what they were voting for!

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 28/10/2019 08:01

@Trewser it's not nuts to be worrying if he can feed our children if things get bad Hmm

OP posts:
Trewser · 28/10/2019 08:01

I think all the things youve listed will be fine. Its fruit and veg that will be difficult i would have thought, hence stockpiling money rather than stuff!

Trewser · 28/10/2019 08:03

Yes it is bercow because there's absolutely nothing you can do about it. Send them with food is the only practical thing you can do if there is an emergency.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 28/10/2019 08:06

Did you know that sanpro, nappies, dishwasher tablets as numerous other everyday items are made in the rEU? All of those are made in Belgium.
Money is a good thing to have but it isn't going to help much if there are shortages with massive price hikes. Having frozen and tinned fruit and veg ensures that your family have access to nutritious food. You can't eat money.

Trewser · 28/10/2019 08:12

Ok, well then, perhaps you can share your stash with your ex? Then your kids will be fine?

CactusAndCacti · 28/10/2019 08:16

DDIJ I think it probably is more likely that remainers will 'stock-up'. A lot of leavers are still going on about 'project fear' , operation yellowhammer is just worst case / scaremongering, and it will be fine.

The leavers that are, are more likely to be of that mindset anyway.

I stashed up in February/March. Started using stuff in boxes in June/July. Restocked stash (but differently - heart wasn’t in it) in September.
I’m good for coffee loo roll tins spices rice pasta medications, toiletries etc.
I can foresee another year of this nonsense. If we do exit eu, even with some kind of deal, that will only be the beginning of the chaotic period.
I plan some kind of celebration when I don’t feel need to have ‘stuff’ In ‘just in case’. Can’t see that being for a few years frankly. Perhaps EBBing day. End of brexit boxes. Or End of bloody brexit.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 28/10/2019 10:10

Woo hoo!!!! Extension until january! Phew! Although I was prepared but I am so relieved as many weren't.

BlackeyedGruesome · 28/10/2019 11:18

Flextension, We may leave on the first of December or January.

theangryredpixie · 28/10/2019 20:54

I had a big stockpile, it's now been reduced by half (foodbank and others in need) as I felt greedy keeping so much back for something that doesn't seem to be happening. I'll keep adding to it bit by bit through the next three months though so should have a decent pile again by The end of Jan.

EssentialHummus · 28/10/2019 21:03

Yes, still stockpiling here - not only for Brexit; having a baby (now toddler) made me more mindful of the need to have food in in case of illnesses or adverse weather. I did a bit of a rotation/reshuffle in September, will do again next month.

bellinisurge · 29/10/2019 07:43

Hopefully it isn't just "Remainers" that are getting a buffer of food in.
It's not a mark of True Belief to avoid getting a buffer of food in - although some numpties think it is . Similarly, it's not a mark of despising The Cult to get a buffer of food in although that might be a motivator Grin.
Put your household first. Do what your budget, space and mental health is comfortable with. No other fucker gives a shit about you (because we are in the fucking mess as evidence of that) so you might as well look after yourself.

Trewser · 29/10/2019 08:02

Amen

havingtochangeusernameagain · 29/10/2019 12:14

So if we have an election in December and Boris wins with a majority, can he crash us out before 31 Jan or are we at least safe until then (I know we currently can leave early under the flextension but only with a deal)?

Wondering if I can safely book flights for a Christmas holiday trip to an EU member state, as well as whether I can eat my stockpile before starting a new one. I've no wish to be travelling in the midst of no deal panic, hence why I didn't book a half term trip this week.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 29/10/2019 12:24

@bellinisurge I think it's thanks to you that many people have now got that buffer. I love knowing that I'm covered for feeding the family should we have any difficulties for any reason. I like having extra toiletries and laundry items as we never run out now. Regardless of this political mess it's a very good idea to have a store cupboard of essentials for a few days.

I agree and what to do put in it.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 29/10/2019 12:38

Definitely. The logic of a head torch and how to make it into a lamp was great. Batteries, lightbulbs, fuses, candles. All the things my parents used to have in but due to our 24/7 culture I never have. Well, and we had a lot of power cuts when I was younger. Bottled water is another good one as due to a burst main a couple of years ago we were without water for 24 hours. Being prepared keeps me calmer in these unpredictable times.

I'm in Ireland so hasn't thought about it. Well bar medication and as my meds are controlled substances they won't even give me more than a week at a time so can't stockpile them.

I probably should stockpile as I think we would also be hit bad in the event of no deal as a lot of our goods come via the U.K. I wouldn't have the first clue how to go about it though so if anyone has any tips I'd gratefully take them.

I am also poor as heck. Im on disability, my mam is on a pension and I am still waiting to be awarded half rate carers for her. Plus digging out of a hole.

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/10/2019 15:21

potter, look for the cheap things you actually eat. maybe an extra pack of pasta, tin of tomatoes, cheap tins of veg. (here it is carrots and peas at 21p each)

try to replace stuff a little earlier than normal, til you have one in and one in use.

if you can't do everything, (because on a budget that would take years) do the things that are most important for you,

bellinisurge · 29/10/2019 17:23

Thank you for your kind words BercowsFlyingFlamingo and havingtochangeusernameagain .

@PotterHead1985 , I'm actually in Ireland just now with family. Very comforted (for friends and relatives) by the fact Ireland is self sufficient in food and generally better set up than we are in the UK.

PotterHead1985 · 29/10/2019 17:26

@bellinisurge ooh hi 👋. Nosey me wants to know which part?!!!?
