"Since the end of the second world war and the wonderful decision by European countries to work together, we have had peace. Almost 75 years of it. I love peace and quiet. I love Europe." Sandi Toksvig

I've posted this on the Westministenders thread

Dear Europe. Letters from famous people.

www.theguardian.com/books/2019/oct/26/dear-europe-letters-from-jk-rowling-neil-gaiman-may-beard-and-more

My letter would go as follows:

Dear Europe

Being born on the island of Ireland, I've always considered myself an islander first, and European second. I've witnessed civil war, having lived for the first 19 years of my life in Northern Ireland. However, it's complicated. I loved England and what seemed to me, it's cosmopolitan, carefree way of life. Everyone was welcome in the new age of the Common Market. We were united, as one.

I've been on interrail, and had money stolen, had the French pen pal, gave a room to a French exchange student.

I love Europe. Gladly, I do have an Irish passport. This is my salvation and keeps me connected.

mise le meas

placemats · 26/10/2019 16:44

Perhaps we can all give our letter to Europe.

Mammajay · 26/10/2019 16:54

Dear Europe
Like many partners, you are far from perfect, but we can work on our relationship and make it better. I promise to try and send good MEPs to help with that and not wreckers like Nigel farage and Ann Widdecombe. I value so much the war free years, the shared scientific brilliance, the artistic cooperation and so much else. If we get the chance for another referendum I will vote so stay together, All My Love Mamajay.

Finerumpus · 26/10/2019 18:25

I wonder if anyone will write one of these to the EU.

frumpety · 26/10/2019 18:33

Dear Europe,
It's not you, it's them
lLots of love
Frumpety

placemats · 26/10/2019 19:07

Finer The EU has the internet. I'm sure they have been read.

Danetobe · 26/10/2019 19:23

Dear EU27

Can one of you give me and my DCs a passport pleeeeeease? I've lived and worked in EU27 for 21 of the last 32 years, out of work only 2 weeks the whole time. Never broken the law and know the language of 4 different member states. Had all significant firsts (kiss, shag, holiday alone, own home, child) in EU27; the UK is not my home.

HELP!!!!!!!

X

MysteryTripAgain · 27/10/2019 03:15

Dear Europe

For the benefit of all UK Taxpayers can you explain how, although the UK is the third largest donor to the EU, but has had an ever increasing trade deficit with the EU since 1999, is beneficial to the UK?

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/10/2019 04:33

They have one for us...

Danetobe · 27/10/2019 06:03

Honestly mysterytrip, you don't need a reply from the EU to answer that. It's just logical. The UK uses EU trade deals (very good ones, the EU is a 'premier league' trade dealer) with the rest of the world to make money. It's a beneficial financial set up for the UK. Complex though. It also does not only encompass finances but also science, security, diplomacy etc. The UK will join Canada and Japan in the lower leagues soon and have to schamoose the big boys to get anywhere. Good luck 😉

MysteryTripAgain · 27/10/2019 07:31

@MrsTerryPratchett

Wonder if the makers of that youtube clip received permission from James Blunt before using his music? Sounds very familiar to one his songs.

Brexit is not about leaving the EU forever, but making changes to trade. Do you really think it is the intention of both the EU and the UK never to deal with each other again after Brexit? No way is that the plan.

Leave with a deal that allows EU and UK to trade, but at same time enables UK to make trade deals independently with non EU Countries.

The UK has a ever increasing trade deficit with the EU ( currently £64 Billion). Whereas UK has a trade surplus of £44 Billion with non EU Countries.

MysteryTripAgain · 27/10/2019 07:34

It's a beneficial financial set up for the UK

How is a ever increasing trade deficit with EU, but at same time being the third largest donor to the EU, a benefit to the UK?

The UK will join Canada and Japan in the lower leagues soon and have to schamoose the big boys to get anywhere

The largest economies in the World are;

China
US
Japan
India soon to be fourth.

None of those Countries are EU members.

Danetobe · 27/10/2019 07:43

Lol - the world is divided into trade areas, not nations. Get with the program

MysteryTripAgain · 27/10/2019 08:31

Lol - the world is divided into trade areas, not nations. Get with the program

So how are Japanese cars sold everywhere in the World?

Ever seen New Zealand lamb on the shelves in UK shops?

I have worked in many different countries. Some very rich and some very poor. However, always been able to find Scotch Whisky to buy.

Trade is global. Hence reason UK wants to be able to reconnect with the world.

Danetobe · 27/10/2019 08:44

the most powerful trading groups have the most leverage in trade negotiations. It it beneficial to be part of a large trading group to use that leverage for ones own gain. I have literally no idea how that connects to whiskey or cars in far flung places. Almost all countries are in the WTO and can trade in whiskey or cars. It's just the populace of the ones with most leverage get the best deals.

Sunnyuplands · 27/10/2019 08:47

Dear eu,

I adore Europe, a treasure trove of nations, cultures and languages.

I don't want to turn those lands into an eu empire, or see generations of young peoples lives ruined through stagnating economies, looking more and more like communist Eastern bloc countries.

I don't want the far right to rise up again due to this pressure from the the eu politics and decisions thrust onto them by junker, guy de v and tusk etc.
It concerns me that for the eu to work you need hemogeny and consistency and yet the only way to do that is through full alignment.
It deeply concerns me, how you champion open borders above all even in times of terrorist attacks when terrorists are aided by flitting through your open borders. It concerns me that in the immediate aftermath of a brutal attack your first thought is your borders Shock
It concerns me that your slow and clunky burocracy along with a lack of will means problems created by open borders are not dealt with. Eg slave trade, people trafficking, gun running.

It seems to me, you do things with little thought of the consequences and throw people under the bus in the name of the cause.

Finally, your a group of countries, not a cult. It's supposed to be a trading bloc, not an empire. After we leave you, we will still be part of Europe, trade with Europe, share intelligence and do nearly everything we do now. The fact people are painting themselves blue and dressing up in eu flags shows how car this strange ideology has gone.

MysteryTripAgain · 27/10/2019 09:02

It's just the populace of the ones with most leverage get the best deals

Russia population is larger than Japan, but their economy is nowhere near that of Japan.

Africa population is three times that of EU, but GDP is barely 10% that of the EU.

So where does the population logic come from?

Danetobe · 27/10/2019 09:04

Hi sunny uplands. You seem to believe that things will improve post Brexit. I don't think they will and I hope you're right and I'm wrong. 💐

Danetobe · 27/10/2019 09:12

I can't be bothered anymore. I genuinely hope that the UK finds the sunny uplands and trade deals flow freely, the UK does not have to compromise its workers rights, envionmental and product standards etc in the name of these great trade deals, after all I am stuck with a British passport. I will watch with interest from Denmark over the next few decades (DK gov have guaranteed right for UK citizens regardless of Brexit outcome) and hope to be proven wrong. 🇩🇰

Danetobe · 27/10/2019 09:14

Of course if it goes tits up I can always get a Danish passport by then 🙂

havingtochangeusernameagain · 28/10/2019 09:13

Mysterytrip is an accountant - knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing.

(with apologies to accountants who voted to remain in the EU)

MysteryTripAgain · 28/10/2019 09:25

Mysterytrip is an accountant

No they are not.

knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing

(with apologies to accountants who voted to remain in the EU)

Wonder what those who are chartered accountants who voted leave think of that logic?

prettybird · 28/10/2019 09:41

He's a man who lives in the Far East and doesn't give a fuck about the consequences to those of us who live in the UK - but gets a hard on kick out of mansplaining to us why those of us who actually do care are wrong, don't understand International Treaties, are ignorant about the EU and basically that we shouldn't worry our feeble little female brains with real business issues. Hmm
