Taking back control of our borders

What does this mean? How will post brexit borders work compared to now?

MonnaLIza · 25/10/2019 16:13

they will be well behaved, say please and thank you and go to bed when asked the first time.

fallfallfall · 25/10/2019 16:18

I expect pretty similar as to the boarder between Canada and the USA. Most roads have a physical place where you stop, present documents then proceed if allowed.
Just like non EU members coming into the airport, security check.
Potential great employment oppertunity.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/10/2019 16:19

Poorly.

MockersthefeMANist · 25/10/2019 17:02

Not what the faithful are expecting. The French will be under no obligation to hold onto the Jungle residents and will put them all on the first ferry, and no, we will not be able to send them back.

Mistigri · 25/10/2019 17:28

It depends if you mean borders for people (won't change significantly) or borders for goods (after Brexit all goods shipments will have to complete customs formalities and in some cases physical checks).

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 25/10/2019 17:56

People and goods.

Wimbledonna · 25/10/2019 18:01

More physical checks will slow things down but at least it might make things a little more difficult for bastard people traffickers.

rosie39forever · 25/10/2019 19:49

There aren't nearly enough border staff for checks (thanks to May getting rid of nearly 50% of them when she was Home Secretary) At the moment customs checks are done at the point of origin for EU trade, this won't apply to imports when we leave so it'll be down to our customs and border force. Boris has said that under his wonderful trade deal to keep good flowing most will be just waved through which will be like Christmas for the bastard people traffickers.

RuggerHug · 25/10/2019 20:33

In the sea. Customs offices/checkpoint operators will be the new biggest employer. Perhaps.

helparguement · 25/10/2019 22:31

Well HMRC's plans for a No Deal Brexit involve letting absolutely everything through with no checks at all to try & keep food supply's moving!

We won't be taking control of any borders! Not for the first month anyway - organised crime will have a field day!

rosie39forever · 26/10/2019 09:25

We won't be members of Europol either so no information sharing between police and anti terror agencies, that combined with inadequate border force is going to be a nightmare anyone will be able to stroll in, is this what taking back control means?

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 26/10/2019 09:47

I can see now why no one in the brexit arms answered this question!

OP posts:
Clavinova · 26/10/2019 12:39

I don't see why we can't be involved with Europol after Brexit;

Europol staff according to nationality e.g:

Spain 105
Netherlands (Europol based in The Hague) 103
Italy 88
Romania 67
UK 39

Personnel working at Europol representing Third parties (non EU States and organisations)

United States 29

www.europol.europa.eu/about-europol/statistics-data

Currently, EU citizens only need to show their national identity cards before entering the UK - eventually they will need their passports (at least those without settled status?) - making it more difficult for criminals to enter the country - I assume.

rosie39forever · 26/10/2019 12:52

Yes perhaps criminals/illegals will find legal entry more difficult, but you know those pesky criminals and terrorists aren't really that law abiding so lack of border staff and control will make it so much easier to enter illegally, coupled with no point of origin checks not having a passport isn't going to be a problem.
Like the rest of this shitshow membership of europol will have to be negotiated and we don't know how long that will take, I don't really trust BoJo and smirky Patel to do it either.

Clavinova · 26/10/2019 13:43

lack of border staff and control will make it so much easier to enter illegally

I don't see how it will be any easier - we don't routinely check EU lorries now. Obviously, the plan is to recruit more staff;

homeofficemedia.blog.gov.uk/2019/08/02/border-force-recruitment/

We clearly need to do something - criminals by nationality 'wandering' around the UK;
nationalcrimeagency.gov.uk/who-we-are/publications?search=wanted+from+the+UK&category%5B%5D=4&limit=20&tag=&tag=

It's all very well having European Arrest Warrants - it would be better if these criminals didn't enter the UK in the first place.

rosie39forever · 26/10/2019 14:09

No we don't check all EU lorries because they are checked and custom sealed at the point of origin which won't happen when/if we leave it'll be down to our border control and customs to check each and every lorry coming from the Eurozone.

ragged · 26/10/2019 14:27

EU is required under WTO rules to control its borders, in absence of any WA or FTA, AFAIK. Why has no one mentioned Operation Stack?

Clavinova · 26/10/2019 14:34

EU is required under WTO rules to control its borders

The WTO are reactive, not proactive - they won't do anything unless another WTO member complains.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 26/10/2019 14:35

The British border in Ireland/NI has never made me angry until now. I’m seriously fucked off at the thought of it being put back in place and if a peaceful citizen like me is angry, then the terrorists will be furious. Unfortunately they might get more support than previously, because today’s generation has no idea of how bad it used to be. But I dare say I’m just being negative, according to many in the UK, that don’t have a fucking clue.

Clavinova · 26/10/2019 14:36

it'll be down to our border control and customs to check each and every lorry coming from the Eurozone

I think we only physically check 3% of non-EU traffic in any case - based on a risk assessment.

DGRossetti · 28/10/2019 11:27

I don't see why we can't be involved with Europol after Brexit

Citizens data. The UK would have to offer the same protection to EU citizens data as the EU does, or no deal. Meanwhile, any US trade treaty will insist that any data the UK has also belongs to the US. So no EU data for us.

Of course the UK could give undertakings to protect the data in line with EU requirements. But then what was the point of leaving ? And that's before you consider the EU is already taking actions against the UK for misusing citizens data as things are. So they're unlikely to be in a good faith mood ...

Clavinova · 28/10/2019 12:46

And yet the US and Australia are both associate members of Europol??

DGRossetti · 28/10/2019 13:46

And yet the US and Australia are both associate members of Europol?

The key is "associate" ...

Pinkblueberry · 28/10/2019 13:57

I think it says a lot about our country that we’re so preoccupied with this despite being an island - most other countries in Europe and elsewhere you can just drive into and they seem to manage ok. For us it should be a doddle - but as with most things we are not as organised and efficient as we would like to think.

whyamidoingthis · 31/10/2019 13:51

@Pinkblueberry - I think it says a lot about our country that we’re so preoccupied with this despite being an island

And therein lies the problem that has resulted in the current mess. The UK has a land border with more border crossings that the entire EU has on its eastern border. There are 208 land border crossings on a 500km border in the UK. The EU has 137 crossings with countries to its east.

Have a look at this www.irishtimes.com/news/world/brexit/borderlands/the-border
