If BJ's WA gets passed by 31 October & accepted by EU, what happens next?

I understand the plan is transition period until end December 2020. It seems very possible that UK could get to end December 2020, have no FTA in place with EU, and then crash out.

Or is there room for UK to legally negotiate an extension to the transition period, starting January 2021?

December 2020 doesn't seem very far away.

Under the new WA there is no guarantee that a FTA will be in place in Dec 2020 and if that is the case, the GB (ie minus NI) simply drops out of the EU unless the transition is expended.

Some people think this is the plan.

Under the old WA, a whole-UK backstop would have kicked in but this is no longer the case.

Typos galore, but you will get the drift.

There is def an option to extend the transition period - I think the max is 2 years.
Also there will have to be a GE. Theoretically labour government could get in and negotiate much softer Brexit though admittedly not very likely at the moment. But the government negotiating it will be different to the current government.

Perfect reply, thanks!!
I couldn't make up my mind about how I felt about the BJ deal, but that seals it for me. If you oppose No Deal, then BJ proposal is truly awful.

ok... i thought I understood but maybe not...

Come end Dec2020, does Parliament have any say in whether there is an extension, or is it merely a decision betw. EU & UK Govt to arrange?

May's W-agreement said this

Part Four: Transition

The transition period, also described as the ‘implementation period’ is meant to bridge the period between the date of the UK’s exit from the EU and the entry into force of the new, yet to be negotiated, UK-EU partnership arrangements. The transition will run until the end of December 2020, with the possibility of extension for up to two years. The extension of Article 50 to 31 October means the transition period is now shorter. A decision on extending the transition period must be taken by 1 July 2020.

Hopefully there will be a workable trade agreement in place. Maybe a Norway + deal. After all we have all the mechanisms and alignments in place already and are used to free trade with the EU. Not starting from scratch is a good start. I'd be happy with an identities card (as most of Europe has) so that we can regulate the movement of people better, which should have been the case anyway, and which Europe follows. That way we could have a semi freedom of movement for people to maintain our workforce, and not have a nonsensical, unworkable points system in place.

ok, I found the current version, BJ's has the same paragraphs. So a govt. inclined to negotiate extension could do so.

Except BJ has said he won't ask for extension. We should know if extension could happen by July 2020.

Barclay not towing the line...

Sounds like vote on BJ's current deal is the last chance Parliament has to fully prevent No Deal, short of VoNC I guess, but would have to be long before December 2020.

If BJ's WA gets passed by 31 October & accepted by EU, what happens next?
