Services funded by EU

I live somewhere very rural. We have very very few services here, every single one is funded by money from the EU, including some medical services, the community is very dependant on various EU grants, all spread out round the county. The county voted overwhelmingly to remain for this reason.

I was wondering if anyone has any idea what happens about this sort of thing when/if we leave? I'm in Wales, the chances Westminster even know of the area is remote!!

Just wondering. I thought people here might know.

I'm really sorry you gave this worry. All I can suggest is that you and neighbours and other residents make ass much noise as possible about it. Forgive my ignorance, but is transport a devolved issue? In which case make sure your Senedd representative knows about it. If not devolved, raise it with your MP to write to the Ministry of Transport or whatever they are called .

As we are net contributors to the EU budget then in theory your local services are being paid by us in a roundabout way. In theory they should continue after Brexit because the money isn't rerouted round Europe, but whether the country's economy will take a sharp nose dive (I think it will) and leave the budget short is another matter.

For the same of a few £s they should have just left it to the status quo

That was not the promise. The promise was All of our Pre-Gross Eu contribution would be diverted to the NHS.

(or was that a tiny fib?)

mockers. Those promises! Laughing my socks off.

Google rural development for wales fund after Brexit. It looks to me like the government have confirmed they will extend the funding after Brexit. But you must keep on top of this with your MPs.

Thanks for the replies! I have contacted my MP about it. I just wondered if there had been any thing said about it I'd missed.

Public transport here is a joke. Buses are now 99% school children only (if they meet the criteria) and trains are at best every two hours on a good day (four hours is more realistic).

No we have some mental health initiatives and job centre outreach which is EU funded (we now have one jobcentre only and the county is huge so there's supposed to be some service run north and south of the county but I don't know if that ever happened).

As a fellow Welsh person with a fair bit of knowledge of this, we’re fucked. Westminster will not cover the EU funding loss. Wakes is a net gainer from the EU.

MockersthefeMANist · 15/10/2019 18:21

Wales is a case study of the chickens, unhappy with the farmer, deciding to vote for the fox.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 15/10/2019 18:25

It looks to me like the government have confirmed they will extend the funding after Brexit.

Oh that's all right then. Nothing to worry about. It's not as if the PM has ever been caught lying or anything, is it?

Oh wait...

Current funding is set to end in 2023 at the latest. The Westminster government has committed to honouring this funding which is already allocated in the event of no-deal.

Beyond 2023 there is no commitment from the Westminster government to match EU funding to Wales. It is not a devolved issue as if the money isn't given to Welsh government then they can't spend it. They have always made the case that Wales shouldn't lose out but I'm certain we will.

Becca19962014 · 15/10/2019 19:57

Tbh I was of the "we're fucked" train of thought but have been hearing a lot about funding being matched thrown around recently.

I doubt Westminster, other than our MPs, even know where Wales is. During the storms of 2014 we had children stranded and adults losing their jobs unable to go to school/work for almost two years because there was no funding for the railway to be fixed for them to get there and no, there was no alternative bus. So children missed doing their GCSEs (forget online learning in an area where Internet can go out for days at a time and mobiles rarely work and there's no where to sit exams for GCSEs or a-levels), businesses closed. It was awful. People were furious as there was no help at all available to fix the line - we heard a lot about it "just" being a tourist line. Yes it is a tourist line AS WELL but a lot of people actually live and rely upon that line.

Meanwhile the damage in Devon was much more quickly fixed, not saying it shouldn't have been, but the comparisons between the two situations was very telling.
