How does a GNU work?

Under what circumstances might we get one?

Who appoints it?

Does it have a use by date?

Is it cross party?

Thanks!

I really appreciate this topic, Brexit, as it's my go-to for clarification, especially Westminsterenders- especial thanks to RTB and the stalwarts in there.

I also read the Brexit arms, because tho chilling, it is important that we identify what new rabbit holes the goady fanatics are jumping down, now!

Sorry, who is goady? Hmm

What normally happens is the party with a majority gets to form a government when Queenie sends for the party leader.

If no party has a majority, HMQ normally sends for the leader of the largest party and asks the question, and they may try to form a minority govt. with minimal support ('confidence and supply') on crucial votes, as Theresa May did. Or, In 2010, David Cameron arranged a coalition with the Libs sitting in govt alongside him.

A National Govt, Govt. of National Unity or Grand Coalition is what you get when the two largest parties and possibly others come together in govt as in 1916 and 1940. In 1931, The Labour Party split over this arrangement and Ramsay McDonald took the minority of his MPs into coalition with all the Tories and some of the Liberals.

What people are speculating about in this case is the possibility of some or all of Labour joing with the SNP, Libs, PC, IndyTigers and exiled Tories in a short-lived govt. to get the extension then call an election. In this case.

This would arise if the current govt. lost a vote of no confidence and the Queen sent for the leader of the official opposition, who said he would attempt to put this together.

Queenie's 93, she can do without this.

I just said: Brexiters in the Brexit Arms: 'We won/you lost/ Get over it, snowflake".

Anyway, a GNU.

What? How? When?

And, having read a recent post, could it revoke A50?...

Mockers- sorry, cross posted with you. Thanks!

I see you missed the irony then.

SingingLily · 01/10/2019 15:46

This would arise if the current govt. lost a vote of no confidence and the Queen sent for the leader of the official opposition, who said he would attempt to put this together.

Just to add, under the FTPA, if the current government loses a vote of confidence, it has fourteen days to win a second vote of confidence before an alternative government can be considered.

No, mustard, I just can't be arsed to even engage with the the level of critical and analytical inability that celebrates No Deal as the way to go. Unless you are a Brexit chaos currency speculator in which case you know where you can go.

For three long years, Leavers have been asked what the benefits of Leave are, and all we've heard is soundbites manufactured by Cumjob. I, along with many, are through with you in terms of 'engagement'. But it is still dryly amusing in TBA, to witness the latest 'Aw, leave us alone in here, you nasty Remainers, chucking actual facts at us and expecting us to form coherent sentences in reply! This is our 'safe space'. Mwaaaah!'...

And, by way of 'facts', I follow Westminsterenders, where, admittedly, Leavers bar a couple, are scared to go becasue it's too 'facty'; and I go to TBA to see the latest spin as to why illegally shutting down parliament is such a wheeze.

That's not intended to be 'goady', more 'a statement of fact'.

If you feel goaded by that, just rock gently and remember that you've 'Taken Back Control'. Although you should be practicing 'Surrender Bill' and 'Doubling Down' on 'Betrayal' by now, but, well done on no longer chanting '80 million Turks'; and '£350m for the NHS'. Dom likes it when you keep up.

Hop on back to TBA.

GrinGrinGrin

Hoisted by your own Petard.

Brilliant.

Miljah · 01/10/2019 16:08

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean. But hey, no change there Wink.

Play nicely, children.

And sing the GNU Song

Notthebloodymustardcushion · 01/10/2019 16:14

I think I have made my point clear to any reasonable person. As you were, enjoy your “not intended to be ‘goady’” discourse, I will gladly retreat now, to under my Brexity rock where I and the all other ‘stupid’ leave voters belong. Wink

Thank you for putting me back in my place Wink

Miljah · 01/10/2019 16:15

Thanks, SingingLily. Do you know if there have been examples of a VONC being reversed in the 14 days? Ta.

OP posts:
SingingLily · 01/10/2019 16:48

The FTPA was only introduced in 2011 (David Cameron and Nick Clegg) so its VONC provision is relatively new and has never, to the best of my knowledge, been teste

SingingLily · 01/10/2019 16:49

Sorry, "tested".

Although it may have been a Freudian slip Smile

Miljah · 01/10/2019 17:01

Grin Freudian slip! again, thanks.

You're entirely welcome, Miljah.

I had actually joined the thread thinking that it might be a logical and non-divisive exploration of what might constitute a GNU and was happy to contribute on that basis, but I now realise that there can no place for me here either so I will go and join @Notthebloodymustardcushion in the Brexit Arms and leave you to it.

Jux · 06/10/2019 16:04

The GNU song is Flanders & Swann, not G&S
