Brexit Election threat of £80 fine for not registering to vote for 16 year olds

My son turned 16 in June. In August he got a letter from Brent Council saying that if he did not register to vote by 3rd September he would fined £80 (who is supposed to pay that since he is at school and not earning?). Why the big hurry for him to register when he's only just turned 16? Is this because Labour may put in an amendment to change the voting age, and they are desperate to have 16 year olds on the books they they think will vote Labour?

We got the same

Why do you think its a labour thing

I assumed it was a government thing

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 06/09/2019 11:02

Oh ours was really fucking irritating

He had to send it back by the 27th of august

The letter was received when we were in holiday, just lucky we were back in time

What the hell is the point in sending a letter with a deadline to a child that may be on holiday!

Its not like the6 dont know that someone just might be on holiday during the school holidays!

Quellium · 06/09/2019 11:02

Why would it be anything to do with Labour? Are they mentioned on the letter?

leghairdontcare · 06/09/2019 11:04

It's the law. Labour aren't in power in England so they can't change the law. It is literally nothing to do with the Labour party or any upcoming election.

fedup21 · 06/09/2019 11:36

Why on earth would you blame Labour for this?

This goes to show what a good job the press have done in brainwashing the masses!

twofingerstoEverything · 06/09/2019 11:40

I burnt my toast and tripped over the cat this morning. Fucking Corbyn.

time4chocolate · 06/09/2019 12:08

It’s just standard procedure:

berlinbabylon · 06/09/2019 12:12

I find this all really irritating. Why do you have to reconfirm every year and why is there a fine? If they want you to register like in other countries then just introduce a registration system (and an ID card while they are at it). Do they really think we are so stupid?

S1naidSucks · 06/09/2019 12:12

I burnt my toast and tripped over the cat this morning. Fucking Corbyn

Well trying to make toast at the same time as fucking Corbin, probably wasn’t a good idea. 😁

bellinisurge · 06/09/2019 12:14

I thought it was 17 year olds "rising 18 year olds " or whatever. Maybe they are planning to try and lure the SNP in with a promise to let 16 year olds vote.

As much as I sympathise generally with young people getting shafted by people of my generation can I just say "no representation without taxation ".

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 06/09/2019 13:39

Fucking Corbyn

You named your cat Corbyn Shock

Sorry...couldn’t resist

zebrasdontwearbras · 06/09/2019 13:44

What? My DS is 17 and I've never had this?

Afaik, we have not registered to vote either, since he can't vote yet!

fedup21 · 06/09/2019 13:56

We had to fill in anyone over 16 on the form when the electoral roll thing last came.

zebrasdontwearbras · 06/09/2019 14:00

Blimey - pretty sure my form said 18 - but I've just registered him this minute!

He's already gutted that if we have a GE in the next couple of months, he won't be able to vote. This'll rub salt in the wound. The past two GEs he has said "I'll be voting in the next one!"

zebrasdontwearbras · 06/09/2019 14:01

I've not had any letters as in the OP though Confused

MaddieElla · 06/09/2019 14:06

I had our usual "confirm the house residents" letter and on it, it said to register a child if they had just turned 16. My DD turned 16 in June so we registered her.

£80 is an outrage.

NoBaggyPants · 06/09/2019 14:10

OP's flawed assumption is hilarious, just shows how people are sucked in by bullshit.

MockersthefeMANist · 06/09/2019 14:24

It used to be the "Head of the Household" (man) who was responsible for registering everyone resident. Now it is the responsibility of the individual.

The idea of putting all 16 yo's on the list is so they can automatically be added as and when they turn 18. Since under 18s cannot sign a contract, it is difficult to see how they can be made responsible for this as minors.

ragged · 06/09/2019 21:06

eek, I have a feeling I never put DD down (turns 18 soon).

Just sent her a link so she can get herself on form.
