www.economist.com/graphic-detail/2019/08/29/fears-of-a-german-recession-are-rising

Germany, the biggest economic power house of the EU is on the brink of a possible recession.

As a brexiteer - I’m glad we are leaving the EU.

I think the looming no deal Brexit could cause a global recession..... then the world would hate Britain, not just the EU.

Parkandride · 03/09/2019 18:31

As they were in 2008 for less time than we were. I'm sure our impending recession will also be longer this time if we leave

onalongsabbatical · 03/09/2019 18:33

This again? Red herrings all over the place.

Tiredofthelies · 03/09/2019 18:35

Peter Osborne, financial correspondent wrote yesterday that “Brexit, no deal or otherwise, isn’t the reason for what may unfold in the coming year.”

Italy can’t survive in the Eurozone for much longer, nor can Greece and the knock on effects will be huge. These countries are in serious trouble and we need to get out before the whole thing crumbles down around us

Apparently the USA is on the brink of a recession

orangeshoebox · 03/09/2019 18:36

ohhh look a butterfly

ElloBrian · 03/09/2019 18:37

You do know that the Eurozone is a different thing to the EU, don’t you OP? Also I note you don’t mention France or Spain, both of which are doing pretty well at the mo. Germany and Italy have very export heavy economies and so they are suffering from the slowdown in world trade caused by the US - China trade war. It’s nothing to do with the internal workings of the EU.

Tiredofthelies · 03/09/2019 18:41

Yes of course I am aware of the differences - I am talking about the knock on effects for the UK.

We have already voted to leave. The majority of people wanted to leave. You cannot just undo democracy because the vote didn’t go your way.

OP posts:
SalrycLuxx · 03/09/2019 18:42

The uk is also on the brink of a recession. And?

pikapikachu · 03/09/2019 18:42

I think that Trump's trade war with China will also provide convenient excuses for recession.

BelleSausage · 03/09/2019 18:44

This has been done.

No, it isn’t. And it’s nothing to do with anything to do with Brexit.

Grasping at straws much?

Have you seen the recent U.K. manufacturing figures. Sheesh.

Mistigri · 03/09/2019 18:46

Second quarter GDP:

Germany -0.1%
U.K. -0.2%

(Other European economies are still growing of course).

Outsomnia · 03/09/2019 18:47

I really don't think leaving the EU (in the way that it is being conducted anyway) will do anything to protect the UK from recession.

Quite the opposite in fact. UK is tied to Europe via trade whether you like it or not, so when they get a cold UK will get the flu and all that.

I suppose it would be better to paddle your own canoe in a maelstrom of recession. But sure, go ahead, prove it will be better that way.

Tiredofthelies · 03/09/2019 18:47

The sooner people accept we are leaving the better, we voted for it, and we are going...

OP posts:
3luckystars · 03/09/2019 18:48

I thought all countries go in and out of recession all the time.

Hirsutefirs · 03/09/2019 18:49

Them having a recession doesn’t make us prosperous.

Outsomnia · 03/09/2019 18:50

Why has UK not left already is my question if it is so good to go it alone without any trade deal/agreement with the EU?

Someone please, please answer me why we are still here arguing the point, when if it was such a great idea to leave with No Deal we could have left a few years ago.

I think some might know the answer. But there are none so blind.....

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 03/09/2019 18:52

Hark, is that the sound of a dead cat with a mouthful of red herrings hitting the table? I think it is.

onalongsabbatical · 03/09/2019 18:53

@Tiredofthelies no-one has to accept anything they do not wish to accept.
Those of us who wish to continue resisting Brexitty insanity will continue to do so. Forever if necessary. Ta very much.

NotStayingIn · 03/09/2019 18:53

The sooner people accept we are leaving the better, we voted for it, and we are going...

This is such a classic example of why I think people who voted for Brexit often come across as such simpletons.

Outsomnia · 03/09/2019 18:55

Any cogent arguments OP other than the soundbytes you may have been chipped with?

Why is UK still in the EU if it is all so bad? I just don't get this.

Leavers/Brexiters must be waiting for something or something. What are you waiting for!

TellMeHowToFeel · 03/09/2019 18:56

@NotStayingIn sadly, I agree. Was just reading this thread and trying to figure out how the "we're going, so accept it" argument is in any way relevant to the OP? It's like the record's stuck.

pikapikachu · 03/09/2019 18:59

Countries go through recessions. Whether or not we're in the EU, other countries' economies will affect the UK because it's 2019 and countries are interconnected through trade. For example the credit crunch just over 10 years ago started in the US

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 03/09/2019 19:00

he sooner people accept we are leaving the better, we voted for it, and we are going

Sounds a wee bit desperate

And i am virtually positive ive heard it before twice!

catlady3 · 03/09/2019 19:02

Just don't forget that the British economy shrunk by 0.2% last quarter, while Germany shrank 0.1%, ie UK is doing worse than Germany 😉
