Hadn't heard of a few of the things mentioned in this before. Scary as I was hoping for reassurance that No Deal wouldn’t be as bad as I’d feared :(

They sound utterly inadequate and I actually feel sorry for the people who insist it’s all “project fear scaremongering” as they will be the least prepared.

Am pregnant and will be giving birth after Brexit, getting anxious about it now.

That flow chart at the bottom of the article is terrifying.

(Geeee)

WTF0ver · 30/08/2019 12:37

FFS. Need to send this to my leave voting parents

CloudyVanilla · 30/08/2019 13:20

Mmhmm, I also have leave voting parents who seem to see no problem in any of this and also no problem with the proroguing of Parliament (well my mum at least, is very poorly and doesn’t talk about Brexit ever).

My mum is lovely but really naive, always has been. So disappointing this is our future. I have a an almost 4 year old, almost 2 year old and am due with my third in January. What kind of country am I bringing them into?

Can’t believe the kind of stuff we are going to have to be worrying about over the coming years :(

I desperately hope I really am just a hysterical remoaner and that there’s no basis for my worry whatsoever.. I remember the bliss a few months ago of believing at least no deal was unlikely. Can’t believe what all this is boiling down to :(

It will be worth it in the long run according to my Brexiteer parents.

😫

The BMJ, the BMJ, that well respected medical journal has published an article which states that

"The government’s claims that it is prepared for no deal are implausible and, at best, might mitigate some of the worst consequences".

I am Irish..... and I could weep for the damage being done to your country. Actually, I think I'm finished weeping and into a more "meh! that's a pity. I've got to crack on and sort out the impact on me".
I suspect many Irish people think similarly.

londonloves · 30/08/2019 14:02

But it's the BMJ. I think we've had enough of experts, don't you?
(I may have inadvertently taught my toddler the phrases "I need a gin" and "let's buy some wine" this week).

CloudyVanilla · 30/08/2019 14:03

That’s what scared me Duchess, especially since they have literally given examples of the governments huge expensive cock ups already in the article.

Their insistence that a no deal scenario cannot be managed anywhere near to the degree the government are claiming is really worrying.

Am writing my prepper shopping list now, only have 2 pay days in which to do this now :(

@CloudyVanilla have a look at Jack Monroe's stash list on her blog, good place to start. A

The BMJ, the BMJ, that well respected medical journal has published an article which states that

Looks like scaremongering to me - did you notice the footnote at the bottom of the article?

"MM receives funding for research and advice from the European Commission, is past president of the European Public Health Association, is a founder of NHS Against Brexit (a civil society organisation which campaigns to remain in the EU) and is research director of the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, in which the European Commission is a member."
"MR is president of the UK Faculty of Public Health. DS is a recipient of a European Research Council award.TH is a Jean Monnet professor, formerly partially funded by the EU"

cherin · 30/08/2019 14:59

Bingo!
I was expecting you to note that some of the surnames don’t sound very British

CloudyVanilla · 30/08/2019 15:05

But rather than it being scare mongering, perhaps the reason they are against Brexit is because of their findings??

I just don’t get it. Anyone who says anything negative about Brexit is scaremongering. But all the “positive” stuff, we are just supposed to accept this blindly and assume that anyone peddling out these supposed benefits are to be entirely trusted?

I hope to god this is all wrong. I really do. I would take the smug tirades of staunch leavers over the reality of a shit Brexit any day of the week. But I don’t believe peopel saying it’s going to have this impact are wrong. Unfortunately.

londonloves · 30/08/2019 15:05

Yeah, fuck all those people with their pHds. What do they know about anything?

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/08/2019 15:07

I know you think that's a gotcha Clav but it seems to me that all that proves is that the writers are very experienced and respected in their field.

DuchessDumbarton · 30/08/2019 15:10

Thats a good point Clavinova.... in research, we are always looking at the author and any possible biases or influences that might be brought to bear on the results (conscious or unconscious).

However, I think you would struggle to find any research anywhere is Europe that is not even partially funded through EU sources.

So, it's interesting that you pulled out those two examples.
You could have noted that
"MR is president of the UK Faculty of Public Health" and that "TH was adviser to the House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee." or even, that
"We have read and understood BMJ policy on declaration of interests and declare the following interests. TL is an unpaid member of the London Food Board advising the Mayor of London".

Clavinova · 30/08/2019 15:14

I was expecting you to note that some of the surnames don’t sound very British

Indeed - published by May van Schalkwyk and colleagues. Grin

londonloves · 30/08/2019 15:18

@Clavinova do you honestly and genuinely believe that you know better than all these people? Also please can you explain in whose interests you think it is to be scare mongering?

cherin · 30/08/2019 15:28

Guys, seriously, Clav has ben on these posts for quite some time, she jumps in and provokes and then when someone asks a detailed question she never replies. There’s no point in discussing with someone who’s not interested in listening.
I’ll grant she’s persistent. Someone else would have stopped sooner, if anything out of boredom as we go in loop over loop.
She just got a double bingo point, though!
Let me think about someone else with an exotic surname...mmmhhh...Raab...DePfeffel....
