There are many ways to enforce power indirectly using privilege. Jacob Rees Mogg knows every trick in the book and dresses it up as respectability rather than a subtle form or intimidation and deliberate exclusion.

It's not the stuff 'of the people'.

Meanwhile the newly crowned PM, is making rather a bug deal of how he is the man 'of the people', here to serve them and to deliver their will.

There's a big theme here about presenting as 'of the people' whilst simultaneously serving the interests of the elite and reestablishing its power over the people.

It's a theme that is set to run for some time, and is entrenched in Trumpism too.

This shift in power is particularly harmful to women it must be noted.

'Strong and stable' was 'weak and wobbly' and we should be mindful that in the era of reversed spin, what 'of the people' signifies.

We've long known about the authoritarianism at the heart of leaving thinking. It's only now that it's finally going to start stomping it's feet all over our freedoms and power.

The road back will be a long and hard one because we failed to spot the threat and the dangers of it.

Well the Greeks managed astoundingly well with sortition.

I wonder if you’d be saying that if you were a Greek 2,500 years ago!

SegregateMumBev · 31/07/2019 18:52

Love the idea of using Oxford commas as, rebellion.

DGRossetti · 31/07/2019 18:57

Distrust of bureaucrats and politicians is what makes people vote Conservative.

Only the stupid ....

DGRossetti · 31/07/2019 18:59

For the avoidance of doubt, my suggestion would be that sortition be properly paid, and no one lost out from it. So almost as removed from jury duty as you can get, without actually leaving the UK.

QueenOfThorns · 31/07/2019 18:59

Happy to have you, woodpigeons! DD loves horses, so you could have her as a stable hand (she’s only 5, so perhaps not much use).

However, and I’m very serious about this, Oxford commas are not permitted on the property. So there.

Grinchly · 31/07/2019 19:00

I think @QueenOfThorns sourced a rather magnificent property for us all, but don't want to derail the thread - maybe she could start another?

@prettybird your garden looks even more magnificent this summer! ( see, I can say that, this community IS real Smile) And, those gorgeous resident Siameseses Grin

I couldn't thole their absence from this thread! ( Is that right Hmm need to,practice if I am to emigrate north!)

Iambuffy · 31/07/2019 19:01

I may distrust the current crop of useless twats but I will NEVER vote tory.

Iambuffy · 31/07/2019 19:02

I seem to remember that on one of the 1st threads that we proposed a commune??

I'm still up for that.

Grinchly · 31/07/2019 19:02

Woah, sorry, That comma was from The Other Place.

NoWordForFluffy · 31/07/2019 19:03

If you think it's only the pay issue which makes people want to avoid jury duty, I don't think you're right. You haven't persuaded me that your idea has legs / hope of success.

DGRossetti · 31/07/2019 19:05

Love the idea of using Oxford commas as, rebellion

There really needs to be a chart act (yeah, Grandad, on the wireless Grin) called "The Oxford Commas". Or "commers" if it's in anyway ruder ....

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 31/07/2019 19:05

The garden looks amazing pretty

I might leave a beach towel up by the trees to reserve myself a spot post Brexit.

DGRossetti · 31/07/2019 19:06

If you think it's only the pay issue which makes people want to avoid jury duty, I don't think you're right.

No, some people are just loath to put into anything ...

prettybird · 31/07/2019 19:13

That is indeed a suitable use of "thole" Wink

But the fleabags are feles non grata at the moment Angry as they are literally fleabags Hmm They've been treated - probably made worse by the warm weather and all the mice they've been catching Hmm

prettybird · 31/07/2019 19:22

There's what we call "The Terasse" under the trees, with a wee cast iron table and chairs. Lovely for morning and late evening coffee/drinks. Smile

....only problem is that in a month or so, you have to beware the hundreds thousands of pears that begin dropping from a great height. That big tree is a c100 year old pear tree Shock It's the bane of dh's life - for whom the lawn is a labour of love Grin (He'll need bribing with lots of good wine to thole the tents on his precious lawn Wink) The pears would all be down by November though Grin

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 31/07/2019 19:27

I’d get on well with your Dh pretty I have a weird obsession with my lawn too. Mine is tiny so it doesn’t take much time, yours is amazing.

Tell him I’ll help picking up the pears.

Grinchly · 31/07/2019 19:30

All those pears hmmm...Is anyone else thinking.... mmmmm Perry...

@bellinisurge - maybe some chutney, canned pears?

Do reassure dh re tholing tents on lawn though...a property has been identified, for those fleeing England Grin

prettybird · 31/07/2019 19:44

He and our gardening friend from along the road did start trying to make perry last year - but left the pears in the trugs of water a bit too long Hmm. The smaller tree beside it (behind dh) is a fabulous Victoria plum tree that doesn't understand the rule about alternate years for good harvests Grin (which makes it very difficult to prune as you have to do it when you're a wimp like me there are lots of lovely plums already set on it Sad), so lots of plum jam, plum chutney and plum Grin [hic]

Hazardtired · 31/07/2019 20:00

Yes buffy commune! By the sea! I was thinking about it the other day after reading posts about meds. DP is getting so bored of my company he would love some other people to watch tv with (he watched and enjoyed love island Shock I couldnt get on board with his enthusiasm).

BigChocFrenzy · 31/07/2019 20:07

400 seats HAD a natural Leave majority

  • polls analysing seats indicate that most seats have had a Remain majority for some time

Also, Lexiters are far less keen on No Deal than Tory Brexiters
e.g. Corbyn has at least always strongly opposed that version, even when saying we must Brexit

JustAnotherPoster00 · 31/07/2019 20:13

Just seen the crowd clip in Ireland well BJ is bringing people together in methods of protesting him Grin solidarity with all the protesters thats all I can say

BigChocFrenzy · 31/07/2019 20:18

It should be no surprise that the 2017 Labour vote has fallen away

You can't piss off over 70% of your voters on the key issue of our time and expect them to vote for you again

I don't know why anyone still assumes Labour Remain votes can be taken for granted

Most Labour Remainers then, especially the young, naively thought that Labour was more Remainy - I read many of them claiming Corbyn would stop Brexit Hmm

They seemed unaware of his history and what he was still saying about Brexit

However, many Remainers have rumbled him now and won't be voting Labour in the next GE, or for many years to come

No more crowds of young people chanting "Oh, Jeremy Corbyn" - at least, not for the same reason now !

That's much of a whole generation lost to Labour
In fact, looking at the demographics of Remain, Corbyn has pissed off a majority of those aged 45 and under,
which is going to hurt for many years to come
