There are many ways to enforce power indirectly using privilege. Jacob Rees Mogg knows every trick in the book and dresses it up as respectability rather than a subtle form or intimidation and deliberate exclusion.

It's not the stuff 'of the people'.

Meanwhile the newly crowned PM, is making rather a bug deal of how he is the man 'of the people', here to serve them and to deliver their will.

There's a big theme here about presenting as 'of the people' whilst simultaneously serving the interests of the elite and reestablishing its power over the people.

It's a theme that is set to run for some time, and is entrenched in Trumpism too.

This shift in power is particularly harmful to women it must be noted.

'Strong and stable' was 'weak and wobbly' and we should be mindful that in the era of reversed spin, what 'of the people' signifies.

We've long known about the authoritarianism at the heart of leaving thinking. It's only now that it's finally going to start stomping it's feet all over our freedoms and power.

The road back will be a long and hard one because we failed to spot the threat and the dangers of it.

HS3 as a new project and also the upgrading of the existing trans penine routes (which are utterly dreadful, overgraded and unreliable).

Don't I know it! Grin

Stuck on an ancient two car pacer as we speak.

At least I've got a seat.

probstimeforanewname · 30/07/2019 17:18

That's trying to solve yesterdays problems. I'm much more in favour of removing the need to travel. Which has a happy side-effect of making travelling easier for those that need to. And saving the planet too

You are totally right. It certainly makes sense to decentralise all the jobs form being in London and the south east, get employers to offer flexible and home working wherever possible and get decent broadband everywhere. It also negates the need to build so many new houses in the south east as well.

People still need/want to travel though - for leisure purposes as well. But then you need reliability not speed. Happy to take 4 hours if it's on time. Less keen on being told it will take 3 and then it takes 4 anyway.

I think a tiny bit of me loves you Grin. If you're up for nuclear power, it could get serious ...

Anyway, returning to no-deal, assuming nothing more gets put in place, how (if at all) could it affect payment of pensions into non-UK bank accounts. Either because the DWP can't, or because non-UK banks somehow fall outside current banking regulation ?

My (Italian, but lives in Spain) cousin mentioned there's a growing unease in the expat community near her.

Grinchly · 30/07/2019 17:30

DGR - that pensions issue was flagged from the beginning I think. As far as I know still no clarity.

MaxNormal · 30/07/2019 17:38

@Grinchly god that's a miserable bunch of poor sods!

DGRossetti · 30/07/2019 17:40

Interesting.

Maybe it won't do any harm to remind ourselves (and the watching bots) that part of the agreement about the agreement Grin was that nothing was agreed until everything was agreed. Which meant no "mini-deals" as I recall.

It seems some ex-pats are saying there's nothing to worry about, as in the event of a no-deal, the Spanish government wouldn't let them starve. My cousin says her friends are a little puzzled at why they'd think that having lived for years in Spain Hmm As she said, her FiL worked for Franco (unwillingly) ...

Robert Peston's take. He gives the potential disaster far too easy a ride imo but makes some interesting points about the union (and it's imminent demise).

I suppose he could piss off Northern Nimbys instead. The two schemes were meant to dovetail, but I guess one could be built without the other...

I think just using modern rolling stock would lead to an improvement.

Its not all working class red rosette voters up here and the assumption that it is, is one that has cost Labour - and not just because of Brexit imho.

Absolutely not. I have two cousins living in an a very expensive part of south Manchester. Mind you I don't think either would vote Tory ever.

DGRossetti · 30/07/2019 18:59

Lightning up a bit, but god did it go dark.

Wind up torches in place. Not a fan of matches and naked flames. We (well some) forget one reason why fires are less prevalent than even 50 years ago ...

But wrong thread, surely Grin

The other problem, as we know, is the pension payments (whether to EU or to UK-based bank accounts) are in sterling which is now worth a lot less than it used to be.

This is if they decide to uprate them anyway. They might not do; they might get frozen at the date of exit or when the person moves to Spain.

In that case, this lot would definitely do it @flouncyfanny. Won’t they have to anyway? Pensions are frozen in all non EU countries already.

Peregrina · 30/07/2019 19:18

the Chiltern Line

Run by DB.

Is there any nation that the English haven't fought, though?

I don't think the English have been to war with Portugal. If so, it's not surprising, being allied against Spain.

prettybird · 30/07/2019 19:20

MaxNormal - the only other passport I could claim is, like you, a South African one, as I was born there (ancestor arrived in 1777 Shock). I was UK naturalised as a minor so apparently could still get one, but it really doesn't help with Brexit Sad

All my European connections are one generation too far removed Sad My dad could get an Irish passport as his grandmother was Irish but most inconsiderately Wink didn't think to do that before db and I were born Grin And the German and Danish connections are also one generation too far Sad

....but at least I'm Scottish, so I can hope for a passport with a Saltire on it (and possibly a unicorn as after all, it is the national animal of Scotland Wink) in the future - sooner rather than later Grin

Come to think of it, the unicorn would need to be taken off the (navy blue Wink) FUKD passport's coat of arms when Scotland is no longer part of it Grin

I can’t see why RoI would be any different. That’s speculation though.
