{However a judge has ruled that Ms Cornienco should still receive the payments, as under EU law the children remain family members of the father, who lives in the UK.}

My thoughts are that you are 'shit stirring'.
The Child's father is still working in the UK and presumably paying UK taxes.

Bearbehind · 09/06/2019 12:01

Thoughts?

I’m not in the least bit surprised that you get your information from the Daily Mail - it explains a lot.

Zipee · 09/06/2019 12:29

Its fine. Of course if the father lives and pays tax here they are entitled to it.

Over all the cost of cb paid to children aborad is about 30 million pounds, or 0.3 percent of the entite cb bill.

dweebs

Ilovethefuninthesun · 09/06/2019 13:01

Leclerc, it says he’s resigned from his job and no one knows where he is. How do you assume from this information he is still working, and if he is surely he could be traced using his N.I/tax contributions?

jasjas1973 · 09/06/2019 15:09

Well, he was earning 1500 per month and paying tax/ni for many years.
So he has contributed in the system, same as any other worker/parent.

If no one knows where he is, then he won't be working or claiming a NI based benefit, so won't be eligible for CB.

From gov.uk
You or your partner must pay UK National Insurance (if you’re employed or self-employed) or get one of these benefits:

Sounds like a typical DM story that is missing a few facts, to fit their narrative.

Zipee · 09/06/2019 15:12

Another story for some leave voters to froth themselves into a rage over

Songsofexperience · 09/06/2019 15:19

Child benefits and health tourism stories are two DM classics, usually on Sundays too.

1tisILeClerc · 09/06/2019 16:23

Existing arrangements between all EU country members seek to harmonise the payment of health and other benefits across the EU. Through EHIC the UK can 'claim' costs of people treated outside the UK for example.

HagridsBigToe · 09/06/2019 18:28

I think the DM will have twisted the truth slightly.

SistemaAddict · 09/06/2019 22:38

I'm with leClerc and Bear. Have aBiscuit

lonelyplanetmum · 10/06/2019 03:47

My thoughts?

Err that the Daily Mail is better named the Daily Vile or Daily Bile?

It is not the place to research balanced accurate facts.

In fact:
• 99.74 % of child benefit is paid in the U.K.

• Only 0.26% of children who get child benefit are not U.K. based. Of that small percentage not all are EU nationals.

Working this out as a percentage of our GDP of 2.11 trillion. The overseas child benefit payments are 0.0000047 % of GDP

It's one of the many, many misconceptions about EU citizens.

Thoughts?
dreichuplands · 10/06/2019 03:53

I would spend more time worrying about how the healthcare costs of older UK people living in Europe are going to met if there is a no deal Brexit.
I'm not going to stress over payments which have been judged to be legal in a court of law to two dc.

1tisILeClerc · 10/06/2019 07:31

dreichuplands
Yes, a very good point.

bellinisurge · 10/06/2019 17:37

If the father paid UK tax and NI , why not.
I have a now deceased relative who was in the RAF in WWII . He married an American woman and emigrated there. Prospered and had a good life. She happened to be independently very wealthy.
They both received a UK state pension because of his RAF service in WWII despite actually trying to get it stopped several times.
Thoughts, op?

In other words, there are unfortunate anomalies all over the shop.

Suwi · 11/06/2019 12:20

So the husband is now missing so I'm wondering if he is still paying income tax? If he is not then should she still be getting CB having not made any contribution to this country?

OP posts:
1tisILeClerc · 11/06/2019 12:25

Suwi
What a thoroughly unpleasant person you are.

dreichuplands · 11/06/2019 12:36

You know the person who is best placed placed to make this legal decision? The judge who will have had all the necessary information in front of them and the training to evaluate it.

Notstrongandstable · 11/06/2019 12:43

And no British person has EVER claimed something they're not entitled to eh?

Note: I'm not suggesting the lady in this story isn't entitled, merely stop bloody blaming other nationalities for the problems in your own country!

bellinisurge · 11/06/2019 13:30

What @dreichuplands said.
Or is the judge "an enemy of the people ". Let's hope you don't think and talk like that.

onalongsabbatical · 11/06/2019 13:35

I will not click the link, but I assume the children are entitled to child benefit, so I'm glad they're receiving it.

1tisILeClerc, I'm reading your link, I was familiar with this episode but it's good to read about it again and reflect. Thank you for posting it.

onalongsabbatical · 11/06/2019 13:46

1tisILeClerc such a good article and sobering and horrifying and sad. What humans are capable of. And how easily it happens.
