Said by John Cleese (he of Monty Python fame), recently. Link to story is here:

What do other people think? I do see London's diversity as being its great strength, but maybe it's just because I live in the London bubble - and maybe the view from the rest of the country is utter horror that the capital seems to be becoming increasingly disconnected from the country. Both economically and culturally. Hence the Brexit vote - Remain in a sea of Leave.

What's the view from others?

Oh and London votes Labour.

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 19:25

Well you clearly don’t Zipee.

Zipee · 11/06/2019 19:29

No I said everybody can move, no one has to stay where they are.

In fsct places that grew up in the industrial revolution were founded by people who moved.

Have u heard about Southern Rail?Thames link?

Zipee · 11/06/2019 19:33

To be fair am sick or the fucking whinging about "London gets everything", it really doesn't. London contributes more to the economy in tax than it gets invested back in it significantly.

Like I said the transport thing is a bad comparison. Mass transit needs mass population.

TatianaLarina · 11/06/2019 19:39

The amount spent on 'infrastructure' be it roads, public transport and a 'basket' of all the other amenities is up to five times greater in parts of London compared to many Northern areas. If it were reduced to say 3:1 it would represent a massive boost to many areas outside London. There are strategic failures in many areas, basically very poor governance which has been going on for many decades.

Because it’s a huge capital city with millions of inhabitants and millions of tourists annually and if the bare minimum is not invested it falls apart. Literally. Like Hammersmith Bridge. Main arterial route out of London, broken, shut, needs replacing, never has been.

Southern Rail ring any bells?

London is fucking massive and the people who don’t live here don’t grasp how big it is. The population is bigger than that of the whole of Scotland, or Norway or Finland.

Zipee · 11/06/2019 19:43

Oh and even with that big spend ( all of it paid for by London taxes) its still a net contributor.

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 19:49

I have lived in London so i do grasp how big it is. What I don’t understand is why children in London benefit from more funding for museums and libraries whilst children in other areas are etching theirs close down.

Zipee · 11/06/2019 19:58

Children not from London can use those museums. A coach trip is buttons.

Children in London have lost libraries, youth centres, careers services just like everywhere else

Essentially you are complaining about things that are located in London because of history.

TatianaLarina · 11/06/2019 20:00

If you’ve lived in London you should know that libraries have closed down all over.

Museums in London are international and have high annual footfall. What museum in Wigan is going to pull in numbers comparable to the National Gallery, the Nat History museum or the British museum?

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 20:01

You are utterly deluded Zipee.

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 20:02

People pay their council tax which fund led museums whether they live in Doncaster or Fulham. Why should kids in Doncaster not have access to museums because London wants to please the tourists?

Zipee · 11/06/2019 20:05

Except that every area other than London and the South East pays less tax than it recieves back. Council tax and everything.

You don't seem to unddrstand this.

Oh and the museum's are in London becsuse they are national institutions.

Tate liverpool 500,000 visitors per year, Tste modern? 5, 000,000.

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 20:10

You don’t grasp that because of lack of investment people outside London are not in a position to pay as much tax as Londoners. That’s kind of my point.
As for the museums, are you suggesting that only London should have libraries and museums?

TatianaLarina · 11/06/2019 20:11

Why would the major museums move to Doncaster? How many annual visitors would they have?

Is the Louvre in Metz? The Gare d’Orsay in Poitiers?

If you want to be near museums you have to live where they are, same in any country.

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 20:13

Your numbers are wrong too Zipee. Interestingly when Liverpool was the Capital of Culture in 2008 and Tate Liverpool hosted the Turner Prize the visitor numbers went up substantially. My point being that if these kind of events were distributed fairly, other regions would get a greater slice of the benefits.

Zipee · 11/06/2019 20:15

Plenty of museums in Liverpool and Manchester as well.

What was the annual visitor numbers to the museum in Wigan that closed?

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 20:16

There are huge amounts of the population who have better access to places like Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol. Well funded museums should exist in these places. The idea we can all hop on a coach and visit museums in London is daft.

Zipee · 11/06/2019 20:17

www.statista.com/statistics/508218/tate-liverpool-annual-visits-england-uk/

You have museums, am right about the visitor numbers.

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 20:17

Badly funded museums will never attract huge amounts of visitors no matter how valuable they are. The Tories have no political incentive to keep these places going. Their kids all live in London.

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 20:18

You were out by about 150,000 people.

Zipee · 11/06/2019 20:19

So now its that they are badly funded ?
Not the fact that they aren't in the capital, with the largest concentration of population?

More than Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, and others combined

TatianaLarina · 11/06/2019 20:19

Tate Liverpool - 700,000 in 2018.

Tate Modern - 5,868,000

Zipee · 11/06/2019 20:20

I also under stated the nunber of visitors to the tate modern.

Its a general figure of about 10 percent, despite being of similar size.

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 20:22

Zipee said 500,000.

The surrounding areas are hugely populated. Generally speaking the significant population relates to those who can travel to the place within an hour.
