Confusion over the vote on Thursday

Tink1990 · 19/05/2019 15:33

Ive checked my area candidates and not all of the parties are represented. Does this mean I can still vote for a party when there is no candidate? Sorry if this sounds silly, Ive not voted in these elections before. Thanks.

You can only vote if there is a candidate in your area.

Tink1990 · 19/05/2019 15:37

Ok, thanks so much for clarifying Smile

You have to vote for one of the parties on the list, or in some cases there are a few independents. So say you wanted to vote for "Anytown Save The Greenbelt" party and they weren't on the ballot paper, then no, you couldn't vote for them.

Although you vote for a party/independent - the party candidates are listed in order, so e.g. in the south east if the Lib Dems get one seat only, Catherine Bearder heads the list and will get it.

You do not vote for individual candidates in a Euro-election. You vote for a party list.

The link will tell you which parties in your constituency are backing a fresh vote:

I don't even understand how to vote? I'm registered on the electoral role and got a polling card for our local elections but haven't had anything for the EU election??

MockerstheFeManist · 21/05/2019 17:55

Just go to the polling station you went to on the 9th. Give your name and address. You do not need a polling card.

TeacupDrama · 21/05/2019 18:24

in each area there are a certain number of seats, I'm in Scotland there are 6 seats available, you vote for one party on the list ( it may not be the same choice in each area)
The votes are then counted and allocated according to a formula
prediction in Scotland at present we have
2 SNP, 2 Labour 1 Conservsative and 1 UKIP

we have the choice of the following

SNP, Labour Conservative, Lib Dem, UKIP, Brexit Party, Change UK, Green and 2 independents
the main parties have a full list of 6 candidates in order, so if has expected SNP get the most votes number 1 on their list gets a seat, the number of their votes is then divided by 2 and whoever now have the most votes gets the second seat, once a party has 2 seats their original vote is divided by 3
it is highly unlikely than any of 4th or below candidates will be elected anywhere this is the d'hondt formula
The rest of Europe do not vote until Sunday so there will be no official counting until Sunday night

NoBaggyPants · 21/05/2019 18:27

Check where your polling station is, ours is different this time.

The cards were sent out before the local elections, could you have confused them? Don't worry if you don't still have it, you can vote without it.

Stilltalkstotrees · 21/05/2019 18:35

If you are an EU citizen there was an additional form to complete for the EP election (that you didn’t need for the local elections).

Firecarrier · 23/05/2019 09:54

Vote for The Brexit Party if you don't appreciate being mugged off by the fools in power.

1tisILeClerc · 23/05/2019 10:18

Firecarrier
Please post a summary of the Brexit partiy's manifesto, I need to see what they are offering.

insideoutandback · 23/05/2019 10:22

Yes @firecarrier I would also really like to see the manifesto for the Brexit Party just do I can check the policys. Thanks in advance

MissusDave · 23/05/2019 10:24

Just in case @firecarrier doesn't get a chance to respond, my understanding is that the Brexit party have refused to publish a manifesto but the caring folk at LedByDonkeys have taken it upon themselves to put something together: thebrexitparty.com/ Grin

Langrish · 23/05/2019 10:26

RemainVoter.com has conducted analysis of how best to tactically vote in your area to achieve a PV or second referendum. Presumably there is equivalent advice available somewhere for the opposing view.

Flobochin · 23/05/2019 10:27

Its not an individual candidate you are voting for, it's a party.

1tisILeClerc · 23/05/2019 11:40

I believe one of the Brexit party's pledges is for a turd in a paper bag for all voters.
Looking forward to those.

Flobochin · 23/05/2019 11:42

@1tisILeClerc what a crass thing to say.
