Occurred to me that you never hear "Just get on with it" in an operating theatre while waiting for open heart surgery.

Surely it is far better we get it right?

Because the people have spoken....

havingtochangeusernameagain · 29/03/2019 07:47

Because the extreme Brexiteers are worried we'll change our minds if we delay too long.

There is a problem in that although you can declare a legal, and massively significant 'leaving day' there is so much work to do to make it happen equates to a good couple of years of very intense 'paperwork'.
During the period while this paperwork is done, businesses, all of them, MUST have a solid knowledge of their legal responsibilities and compliance checks etc.
Goods travelling UK to China or the other way, are at sea for about 5 or 6 weeks, so tariffs and certifications now may not be valid when the goods arrive.
If the UK goes to basic WTO rules (as will happen when the UK leaves) tariffs for beef from/to Australia for example suddenly increase by 40%.
For your operating theatre scenario, the patient has already been cut open and is now waiting for the surgeons to decide which organs to work on. Life expectancy (success of all UK businesses) is falling as the wait continues.

@1tisILeClerc
Given the number of companies and assets fleeing our shores of late, I don't see how it can get any worse. Certainly I was not sure if we could get to a trade show in Ireland next week. British jobs depending on the orders we take there.

May's WA deal is a mess but nothing compared No Deal

Also someone said on another thread, they want us out of the EU before new tax laws come into effect.

BackInTime · 29/03/2019 08:55

I would actually compare it more to someone getting risky cosmetic surgery to fix emotional and self esteem issues. They have not fully considered whether the surgery would actually leave improve the underlying problems and their quality of life or whether the potential aftermath or risks of surgery would make them feel worse.

MockerstheFeManist · 29/03/2019 09:23

Because once we're out, we're never getting our rebates and opt-outs back, so we're out forever.

Customs Union and Single Market can be joined or left as many times as we like forever after.

VenusOfWillendorf · 29/03/2019 10:41

Partly because of this:

If you want to maintain the status quo on tax avoidance, then the UK needs out by end of this year.

HoustonBess · 29/03/2019 18:40

Because the longer it's left the weaker the supposed democratic mandate (based on a bent advisory ref) becomes. And the clearer it is that any form of Brexit is a stupid idea.
