What did the uk do before they joined the EU?

I'm wondering why people are so keen to stay within the EU?

How does it deliver value for money?

What are the benefits?

What did the uk do and how did it trade before it joined the EU?

Why are people so scared of leaving?

I'd be really grateful if anyone can explain or anyone who remembers why we joined can explain the difference before and after,

Thanks.

Rossetti you are on a roll on this thread.

I've solved the UKs energy crisis. I'm fury-powered ....

MIdgebabe · 26/03/2019 16:54

It is never pointless to want to understand the history, to see what has changed, to understand why choices were made.

RosaWaiting · 26/03/2019 16:57

Rosetti thank you, I will have a look through that when on the PC rather than the phone.

interesting my dad never mentioned this - he is passionately pro EU, but fair enough if he forgot the literature he read Grin

But remember, the UK was already in the EEC. So not voting was in essence a vote to remain as well as actually voting for it. My DM didn't bother with the literature because - being married to an Italian, she'd pretty much staked her position in the most concrete way possible. She still voted though.

Just in case anyone wonders why I'm furious ....

TinklyLittleLaugh · 26/03/2019 17:09

I honestly never realised we were already in when we had the first referendum.

RosaWaiting · 26/03/2019 17:10

Rosetti sorry, I've done that annoying thing of telling half a story there.

my family was very split over Brexit. The only point at which dad agreed with the Brexit voters was those of his generation saying "we didn't want more of a union". That's why I'm surprised he's not raised it.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 26/03/2019 17:12

Certainly didn’t realise we’d been trying for years to get in and were blackballed by the French

There's a case to be made that the direction of travel in 2016 wasn't what was envisaged in 1975, certainly. But not on the grounds that "closer union" was never mentioned, because it was.

There's also a good case to be made that the Maastricht and Lisbon treaties should have been put to a referendum at the time. In hindsight, the argument "we don't do referendums" seems a total crock.

Non ! Grin

Which is why it would have been pants-pissingly funny if last week, an extension had been kyboshed by .... The French.

In hindsight, if only we'd fucking stuck to that.

MockerstheFeManist · 26/03/2019 17:47

Referedumdums?

Blame Tony Benn.

@1tisILeClerc that is the most articulate and well written explanation on why we should remain that I've ever read.

This site is a good one for debunking Euromyths:

blogs.ec.europa.eu/ECintheUK/euromyths-a-z-index/

The wonky veg rule came from the supermarkets, iirc. They demanded perfect fruit and veg and the only reason they are introducing less than perfect is because of consumer pressure.

We are still in the EU. If "wonky veg" was anything to do with EU regulations, we still couldn't sell it. The fact that it's being sold is proof that it's nothing to do with the EU.

The OP got deleted on another thread for racist comments about the people she works with as a police officer. Hmm

But just for fun,
here is what we were ALL watching at Christmas 1972 (because there was nothing else)

Ellapaella
Thanks, that is kind of you. It is however a distillation of the sterling work done by the regular posters on the Westminsterenders threads.

Plenty of 'wonky veg' in my French supermarkets and often a wider range as well.

The OP was referring to a city in the UK and a grouping of citizens originally from a recent addition to the EU countries. It was reported in the Guardian? about 3 months back.

aprarl · 27/03/2019 08:30

Do you know, I've re-read the thread again up to the OP's tantrum, and I can't get over how polite most people are and how mostly they've replied to the exact questions she asked.

She ignored them all. Was she just hoping for attacks so that she could say "fuck you all, I hope you feel guilty, remainers are evil"?

So, so weird.
