Explaining Coup implications

Can anyone explain what is going on and what do you think may happen?

Assuming you mean a 'palace coup' within the Tory Party and not a re-run of the abortive military takeover of the country in 1974?

The Moggsters overplayed their hand challenging May and lost, so she cannot be formally challenged for the leadership for another year.

But she could be 'persuaded' to resign with carrots like a peerage for her and another one for Philip, free stamps for life etc, or they might choose to wield the stick and threaten to set the Murdoch Press on her.

Either way, either the Cabinet and/or the backbenchers in the shape of the 1922 Ctee's "Men In Suits" will be telling her to do the decent thing.

And being the Mayborg, she might just refuse and plough on.

But it's worth a try.

Thanks yes the one going one being reported now.

So they will force her to resign?

What will be the point? Still a mess surely.

They cannot force her out. They tried that and lost. They can put pressure on and hope she sees sense, which would be a first.

@MockerstheFeManist

Love your explanation.

But if the Mayborg is unplugged then what happens? Who is likely replace her (please don't say Bojo) and what will they do about brexit?

MockerstheFeManist · 24/03/2019 14:25

Upon resigning, a PM is by convention asked by the monarch to recommend a sucessor. That's how Eden, Macmillan etc got the gig.

If May plays ball, she would recommend the cabinet's choice, which on the face of it would be Liddington, Hunt or Gove.

So Betty, who's done this before, sends for the recommendee and asks, "Can you form a govt?" To which, they might say, yes, for a while maybe.

Then we have the prospect of a true minority govt, which might well not last long, and hey-hoe, it's general election time, Brenda.

"What? A Nurther Wun?"

Is there any actual evidence that there is a coup?!

Just seems like made-up bollocks to keep the PV March off the front pages at the moment?!

MockerstheFeManist · 24/03/2019 16:28

There is some briefing on an unattributable basis, which could indeed be just a bluff. The grassroots party, average age 128, are all for No Deal and still love Boris, so they will want to get a deal over the line before any leadership contest.
