If May resigns or is forced out in the next few days.....

.... what happens then? They can't throw a leadership contest into this mess surely? Would it mean the collapse of the government as a whole, or would someone else from the party step in to take charge?
Let's for argument's sake say Boris finds himself at the helm tonight... what's to stop him sitting back, doing nothing until the 29th March deadline is passed and we're out with a bump? That's what he wants after all.
I am so confused and so worried. I can't stop thinking about it. So many friends with small businesses who will be immediately affected and so many friends who will find themselves unregistered foreign nationals.

Her deputy David Liddington would be caretaker PM.
It isn't as simple as she resigns and whoever becomes PM.

Perch · 21/03/2019 10:15

We have a permanent civil service, it will be fine.
Rememeber its the party not the person in charge, we don’t have a president.

DonaldTramp · 21/03/2019 11:47

But it David Liddington becomes PM, we have an unelected PM heading up a minority government at a time of national crisis?
And what would his position be about the Brexit mess?
What I'm trying to say is that if we end up with a no-dealer at the helm, what is stopping them from just stalling and timewasting to get us past the 29/3 deadline into a no deal?

While "war gaming " all the different scenarios and possibilities is interesting from a nerdy point of view, it is not healthy to get caught up in mental knots over it.
Focus on the likely outcome. TM resigning isn't one of them.

DonaldTramp · 21/03/2019 12:22

What do you think is the likely outcome @bellinisurge?

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 21/03/2019 12:28

I think the likely outcome is that there will be a third vote on WA and it will squeak through. We get a technical extension to pass whatever legislation we need to get it through.
There will still be whinging by Brexiteers forever.
That or No Deal. Which will be shit but I think that is less likely than WA.
And, sadly , Revoke is even less likely than all those.
A PV wouldn't result in a Remain victory and a GE would just be more if the same.

Yaralie · 21/03/2019 16:38

Theresa May is an unelected PM DonaldTramp

NigelYerABawbag · 21/03/2019 16:40

TM was (just about) elected in the snap GE she called in 2017!

bellinisurge · 21/03/2019 16:41

How is she an unelected PM? She is an elected MP who is head of the largest party and who is able (until Brexit) to command a majority in the Commons. That's how our political system works.

Tavannach · 21/03/2019 16:45

A PV wouldn't result in a Remain victory.

The only way to know that for certain is to have a People's Vote. You can't judge it by what you read online. Internet forums attract the noisy and the loons. As well as us sane folks, of course.

BorisBogtrotter · 21/03/2019 17:10

A PV would completely result in a remain victory.

Leave won by a slight margin last time after promising the world to many different groups. That's been exposed, as has the reality of negotiations.

Remain would win.

MockerstheFeManist · 21/03/2019 17:18

Most new PMs since the war have been initially unelected: Eden, Macmillan, Home, Callaghan, Major, Brown, May all came to power when their predecessors resigned.

David Liddington is a plodder but a good egg who keeps on civil terms with all sides. Echoing Thatcher, he is Theresa May's "Willie".

eddiemairswife · 21/03/2019 17:20

And as far I understand it, if Theresa May resigned, the Queen can ask anyone she likes to form a government.

MockerstheFeManist · 21/03/2019 17:24

The Queen would act on the advice of her ministers, including the departing PM, and send for the recommendee.

The recommendee would then be asked by her Magde if they could form a govt. If they get the votes to say they can, they're in.

Springwalk · 21/03/2019 17:30

There would of course be a leadership contest. Liddington will not be PM, not now not ever. The Conservative party would choose the next leader. So likely to be Hunt, Johnson or the usual contenders.

We are experiencing an historical moment in our country, it is not such a surprise that you should be thinking about it.

MockerstheFeManist · 21/03/2019 17:34

Liddington hypothetically would be a caretaker PM, rather like a caretaker football manager. RAB Butler was effectively this in the 50s when Churchill was incapacitated but nobody told Parliament or the people.

Toooldtobearsed2 · 21/03/2019 17:38

Theresa May was not elected 🙄
You elect the party, not the leader.

MockerstheFeManist · 21/03/2019 17:41

You elect your constituency MP to exercise their judgement and then be called to account for it at the next poll.

Jsmith99 · 21/03/2019 17:47

Theresa May is an unelected PM DonaldTramp

No she isn’t. She is the leader of the largest party in Parliament, and she commands the confidence of the HOC due to the ‘confidence and supply’ agreement with the DUP. This was proved when she won the ‘vote of confidence’ called by leader of the opposition in Nov 18.

MockerstheFeManist · 21/03/2019 17:49

Prime Ministers are not elected. They are appointed.

PotteringAlong · 21/03/2019 17:49

He wouldn’t be an unelected PM though; he has been elected, by his constituents! This isn’t a presidency; we don’t vote for the PM.

Bluntness100 · 21/03/2019 17:52

If her deal doesn't get through next week it is indeed incredibly likely she will resign, she has indicated as much,

As such, yes it's likely she resigns next week, and then we would have a leadership contest, and we Will request a lengthy delay to restart the
Clock.
