May's deal - am I missing something?

I'll keep this brief.

May's deal isn't really a deal, it's just 2 more years in the eu and a backstop.

Technically if MPs voted for her deal we wouldn't be leaving the EU on 29th March. Why aren't they just voting for it then shaping the deal once she is inevitably ousted?

I get why people's vote supporters would reject it but the others just seem to be fighting her for the sake of it?

(Ps. I am a remainer)

What I don't get is that this is, apparently, the only deal the EU will countenance, so what do people expect TM to do? She can't just magic things so the EU agree to something else, can she? Except, of course, no Brexit - they'll go with that. Is that the whole point? (How dumb am I?!)
Jux those are exactly my thoughts.

The biggest problem is that the cabinet and HoC have not caught up with the fact that there are ONLY 3 outcomes and that this has been the case since mid November.
Crash/WA/revoke.
They have all been either 'away with the faeries' or deliberately lying in various forms.
Reality that there are only 3 choices is only now sinking in.
Collectively the UK needs to decide which of the 3 is 'fairest' and none of them will get the UK back to the prosperity and stability it had 3 years ago. Theresa seems to be making it a 1 woman show and pissing off practically everybody.

There is also Corbyn's 'Brexit Light' which would be like having your cake but not being allowed to eat it.

This is the only deal the EU will countenance within the boundaries of TMs red lines. Red lines that are there to satisfy the ERG. She doesn't need to leave the customs union for example, instead she's chosen that path rather than choosing to seek a broad concensus across parliament. If she changes her red lines, new deals from the EU will be available.

{If she changes her red lines, new deals from the EU will be available}

Absolutely, but the EU, having seen the complete bollocks that the UK have come up with over the last 3 years were instrumental in authoring the WA which is a structured plan to leave and are insisting it is signed up FIRST (otherwise the UK would prat about indefinitely) but can then NEGOTIATE how far it really wants to leave while in transition. The EU gets it's subs. The UK can continue to trade tariff free and so on while negotiations happen. It is not great for the UK but that will provide impetus to negotiating like grown ups. Spot the problem?

1tisILeClerc · 21/03/2019 21:19

The UK is throwing about 3 times the EU 'membership fee' at the Brexit preparations so we are going backwards fast.

Avallamp · 21/03/2019 21:23

the complete bollocks that the UK have come up with over the last 3 years

That's the problem. We've got the elected representatives we deserve, so why would we expect them to come up with anything other than bollocks (esp when they take pride in not wanting want to listen to experts)

whatisheupto · 21/03/2019 21:24

Ooh thanks @avallamp and @1tisILeClerc those last 2 comments have really clarified things for me!

whatisheupto · 21/03/2019 21:25

Ok, the two comments before these latest ones!!

Avallamp · 21/03/2019 21:26

Lol Grin

HollowTalk · 21/03/2019 21:27

It really pisses me off when people say they are bored and so we should just leave without a deal. It's ignorance on a massive fucking scale.

1tisILeClerc · 21/03/2019 21:30

Leaving with a 'no deal' will be far from boring once it actually starts.

Jux · 21/03/2019 21:44

Thanks for the clarification. Now I want to knwhy they're not debating the red lines......

I'm appalled by the stupidity of our parliament.

1tisILeClerc · 21/03/2019 21:55

The red lines put forward by Theresa at Chequers (the 12 conditions) could arguably have been a 'piss take' as about 10 of them were directly opposing the base structure of the EU (the 4 pillars) and were so blatant it MUST have been deliberately confrontational.
The UK is still trying for cake, and they won't get it.

PutsFootInIt · 21/03/2019 21:58

Yes, me too hollow. Brexit is going to affect every one of us and the rest of the EU. It is massive. We can't 'just leave'. We have been part of the EU for over 40 years. We share everything. Laws, regulations, employment rights, trading standards etc.... if you were married for 40 years and decided to get divorced. You don't just leave without an agreement unless you want to lose your home, all your belongings, your children....

I just wish that yesterday Teresa May had said that the fault lay with David Cameron, that he had given us a referendum without due care and attention, without informing us as to the true consequences and without even considering what would happen if separate countries within the UK voted differently. I wish she'd said that because of that, she was going to renege on the withdrawal. It's not in the country's interests and that's why it shouldn't go ahead.

keepforgettingmyusername · 21/03/2019 22:44

@1tisILeClerc wow, negotiations over, somebody call Donald Tusk. 1tisILeClerc has sorted Brexit for us!
