A thread for sharing details of our stashes: what we have, what we need, good hiding places and all sorts of hints and tips to help prepare for shortages in the event of a no deal brexit.

I think the local shop near school sells them extortionately and individually so will have to call and get one later.

I will have to check what I have yet to do. Lightbulbs and laundry detergent are still on the list. Unless I find another storage space then we are almost full.

Trying to explain to ds about Brexit this morning. Why people wanted to leave and why people want to stay in ten year old language.

BlackeyedGruesome · 18/03/2019 14:00

Wilko sell the white lindors chocolates. I was really looking forward to eating mine the other day only to find D's had got there first. Bought myself a new box. Better hide them better next time. I had them hidden but DD nearly walked on them . Between them nothing is safe.

NoWordForFluffy · 18/03/2019 14:10

Fibre pots can go a bit slimy while you're waiting to plant them out. I just use teeny reusable pots or seed trays these days.

I've got to pot my cauliflower seedlings on this week, but need DH's help due to only having one useable arm. It's frustrating. I've got peppers which also need potting on. I should be planting leeks out in a few weeks as well.

I got pea and carrots in at home yesterday and I've got peas growing in trays to put in at the allotment when they're big enough to be handled. The mice eat them if you try to grow from seed there!

I'll sow runner and French beans in trays for the same reason. At least they are fine outside and don't need to start indoors as I'm out of space!

bellinisurge · 18/03/2019 14:15

Inside bog roll with the bottoms folded in to make a pot. Cheaper than fibre pots and can be planted directly into the soil too.

AutumnCrow · 18/03/2019 16:15

I'll buy you some, Sparkly. I don't want you being extorted by a sweetshop. That way madness lies, they'll be about 70p each instead of three for a quid. My advanced sense of frugality can't cope ... Grin

Cloudtree · 18/03/2019 20:07

I am definitely addicted.

Todays purchases:

two bags of sugar (very cheap in home bargains) along with just add water pastry mix, vacuum packed corn on the cob, more loo roll, lazy garlic, lazy ginger, lazy chilli and some chip seasoning.

8 asparagus crowns, two more rhubarb crowns, shallot sets and strong white onion sets in Aldi.

Lethal having a client on the other side of the city which requires me to drive right past a lidl, an aldi and a home bargains.

ColeHawlins · 18/03/2019 20:13

I'm very close to buying big jars of pickled eggs. I've just being doing a price comparison.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Chefs-Larder-Pickled-2-25kg-Drained/dp/B01EX18FYO/ref=mpssa111_sspa?keywords=pickled+eggs&qid=1552939757&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&smid=A3JSGTFWKCB0OZ

I can't actually remember what they taste like, but it's tempting to have a large quantity of long life protein that isn't tinned fish or corned beef. Anyone willing to talk me down?

bellinisurge · 18/03/2019 20:17

Dried Soya chunks from Holland and Barrett. Or dried lentils/pulses. Or powdered eggs.
Pickled eggs are a last resort.Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 18/03/2019 20:18

I'd go for pickled eggs above all of your alternatives, Bellini!

They taste of egg. With vinegar. A bit dry, but alright, I suppose! I wouldn't eat loads, but could maybe eat a couple every now and then!

ColeHawlins · 18/03/2019 20:19

Oh that's a good point, we're groaning in lentils. I think I'm suffering from protein panic Grin

ColeHawlins · 18/03/2019 20:21

Hmm. I suppose we could have vinegar themed salads Smile I have so many jars of pickled veg already.

AutumnCrow · 18/03/2019 20:23

You need to have drunk a lot of beer to appreciate a pickled egg.

Cloudtree · 18/03/2019 20:25

Eggs last for weeks anyway though. Just buy a few boxes of normal eggs.

BlackeyedGruesome · 18/03/2019 20:26

We mainly eat lentils and beans as our protein source anyway, along with whole grains.

Apart from tonight when I can't think what to feed the children. There are so many jobs to do that brain has refused to process anything. All waiting in a queue to be process.

ColeHawlins · 18/03/2019 20:28

Okay. I'm backing away from the pickled eggs. I'll buy muffin moulds and try the egg freezing thing instead.

BlackeyedGruesome · 19/03/2019 07:42

I want to go shopping but sorting out yesterdays small haul and the fridge should be a priority.

got the fear. need potatoes. no point until I have room. need to do admin aswell

NoWordForFluffy · 19/03/2019 08:13

I'm going to get more loo roll, tampons and eggs today.

It's odd here, I've really not noticed any bulk buying. Not that I pay a huge amount of notice to others' trolleys, but you see what's on conveyor belts and what people are picking up generally. There's been nothing missing in our Aldi recently either. Either JiT is working well, they're shopping elsewhere or they're not stockpiling.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/03/2019 08:34

How long do lemons last? I'd like some for lemon meringue pie for Easter Sunday. Brexit, or no Brexit, I'm making my usual lunch. If I buy them now and keep them in the fridge, do you reckon I can make them last? It's 5 weeks Confused Maybe I should buy them and freeze the zest and juice together. Bottled isn't right for this.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 19/03/2019 08:40

Thanks OhYou. I hadn't even thought about Easter weekend Shock

Cloudtree · 19/03/2019 09:01

I have a bargain christmas turkey for easter taking up lots of room in my freezer.

I would freeze the lemon juice and the zest if you don't want to use bottled lemon juice. Or make a variant using a home made lemon curd which you could make now.

SparklySneakers · 19/03/2019 09:28

Can you freeze the lemons whole?

Dehydrated mineGrinGrin- the smiley face is a homage to all those who love a giggle at my general prepper adventures in dehydration. Fuck off Daily Mail, I am not suggesting everyone needs a dehydrator for Brexit.they are cool though Grin

We now have 16 more loo rolls, a large bottle of bleach, more dishwasher tablets, more of the kids' bubble bath and more tampons. I just need more eggs and we're done!

MintyCedric · 19/03/2019 11:27

I'm doing a whole month's food shop with extras at the end of the week via Click and Collect. It's already over £200 for me, DD and the cats (not including lunch stuff) and I'm getting a completely different kind of fear!

Used to be able to do a month for the two of us plus then H for about £124-£140, but no cats and I don't normally advance buy my booze as it wouldn't last Blush.
