What do we all make of that?

Pleased they’ve done it but, thinking it’s a desperate measure, from a desperate leader who’s party is on its knees

NameChangeNugget · 25/02/2019 20:48

Whose even...

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 25/02/2019 20:52

What options are going to be on their ballot paper?

AlexaShutUp · 25/02/2019 20:53

Too little, too late. Still, it's a step in the right direction..

Tomtontom · 25/02/2019 20:56

This has always been Labour policy, as was decided by its members at their conference. However there's no guarantee it will be passed, as they already put forward an amendment that allowed for a second vote on the 29th January and it was voted down by the Tories and the DUP.

Note that Soubry, Wollaston and Allen voted against the earlier amendment, so there's nothing to say they'll vote for it now. Unless they were putting party before country before?

ahtellthee · 25/02/2019 20:56

As I understand it, they have to vote against Labours current Brexit proposal and then vote against No Deal.

They haven't confirmed if remain will be on the paper.

But, it is a step in the right direction, which I welcome, even if it is incredibly late in the game...

I hope there's another ref and that there is an option to stay in the EU. It feels like a pipe dream though.
Obviously it won't bring back the companies who have left already or bring back the money that's been squandered already on brexit that could have been spent on underfunded schools and other public services. But then that's the price we pay for people voting in this shitshow of a government

LarkDescending · 25/02/2019 21:00

Emily Thornberry has been doing the media rounds saying that (a) Remain would be on the ballot paper, and (b) Labour would campaign for Remain.

Tomtontom · 25/02/2019 21:02

@NameChangeNugget Labour Party membership numbers actually increased last week, to just under 550,000.

You're obviously not a supporter and I respect any differing viewpoint, but telling lies significantly weakens your position.

AlphaJuno · 25/02/2019 21:21

@Tomtontom you're right. Despite what many on here say, I have seen a lot of people say they have joined the Labour Party this week following chucka and co leaving. I'm sure some have left also but many have joined. Not sure what I think about this though. It's always been Labour Party policy to back when other options exhausted so they're sticking to what they said. I'm a remainer but not sure what good a PV will do. Might disgruntle labour 'leave' constituencies too.

I feel like Brenda from Bristol:. 'Not another one!' Confused

Skittlesandbeer · 26/02/2019 02:04

Surely a referendum takes more time to organise (I mean the practical side, with printing, etc) than you have to play with?

Nice in principle, but hard.

bellinisurge · 26/02/2019 05:31

I love the idea that JC saying he supports it is like a hostage statement.
As long as No Deal isn't an option, I could be OK with a second referendum.

SciFiRules · 26/02/2019 06:13

I'm very glad that we could be nearer a public vote. We are now at a point where a clear position can be put to voters and the self centred oportunists are a little more constrained in the lies they can tell (£350m, easy trade deals, UK having the upper hand, customs union likely etc).
I was a life long labour supporter but I can't vote for this Marxist brand of labour. At best woolly but I rather fear the iorn fist in the velvet glove. JC and John Mcdonald are both extremists with sympathies for awful regimes that pose a threat to the UK.

BerensteinBear · 26/02/2019 06:29

I think it's to try and stop any more Labour MP's leaving the party for TIG.
Corbyn has been a disaster for the Labour Party and this, imo, is damage limitation.

Namenic · 26/02/2019 06:31

Really not hard. Put ALL options on ballot paper and do single transferable vote. In fact they can do this for MPs too as a demonstration. I’m a remainer but if the public wanna shoot themselves in the foot...

ahtellthee · 26/02/2019 07:36

I agree @Namenic. Am watching closely...

Kier Starmer on R4 and the policy seems to be that Labour will put their own amended version of WA to Parliament. Whichever version of WA gets through Parliament (or if!) will then go forward to another referendum. The options will be WA (either Labour's or May's) and Remain.

Dongdingdong · 26/02/2019 08:28

I’m very pleased that Corbyn has finally endorsed this. I honestly think that with the way things are going, Brexit just isn’t going to happen now!

Dongdingdong · 26/02/2019 08:32

Corbyn has been a disaster for the Labour Party and this, imo, is damage limitation.

I think you’re probably right, but at this stage I don’t care if it’s damage limitation or not. The fact that it’s happened is the main thing.

Next steps: parliament votes down TM’s WA again, Article 50 extended to allow for a second referendum, remain wins this time round, boom!

everythingisginandroses · 26/02/2019 20:34

Boom, indeed. You can all thank JC later Grin

Grinchly · 26/02/2019 21:26
