Driving in Europe after Brexit - IDP?

We are going to Holland on 6th April (ferry from Newcastle so not going through any other countries) and I understand in the event of a no deal we'll need an IDP. Has anyone had any experience of getting one of these? How long do they take to come through? They're only £5.50 so happy to get one in advance in case everything does turn to chaos, but just wanted to understand the process a bit better. TIA

I did it today, fairly smooth process, only the post lady could not calculate dates so for a 3 year permit starting on 29.3.19 she first told me it’d be valid till 28.2.20...a few attempts later she agreed the end date is actually 28.3.22 ;-)

I got mine a couple of days ago. Piece of cake. And very like the one I had over 20 years ago. Grin

dcrb I think they got your date wrong, it should expire the day before the day of issue...but never mind...welcome to the world of paper documents!
It reminds me of a “work permit book” I had when a teenager in Italy...you’d get a stamp every 6months and you’d be on a waiting list for seasonal work with the post office or other state institution...;-)

I picked the 1968 licence which covers Portugal, France, Germany and most other EU countries.

If you are going to Spain you require 1949, this covers also a couple of other countries. Check it out on Gov.uk then type in “driving licence after brexit”. It will tell you which one you want for each country. Very easy to get.
