My family laugh at my stockpiling

Whenever I mention Brexit my family snigger .I have a stockpile of food in case of no deal and to be fair they have been fine about that, but I know I am just being humoured.

Laugh back at them when they're hungry.

I'm stockpiling too.

Doesn't take much for the supply to go tits up. The teeny bit of snow we had here (West Country) caused enough kerfuffle.

Maykid · 07/02/2019 20:07

Maybe I am overreacting and all will be fine in the end. That's what they think anyway.

If it's all fine then donate it all to a food bank.

There's no losers.

Fluffyears · 07/02/2019 20:33

Use itbsfterwards to save money. If there are shortages you’ll be the one laughing.

Slatterna · 07/02/2019 20:46

So do mine. Told not to waste my money. But I said it's there in case I need it and will be used regardless.

And if the SHTF and they're hungry I'll be selling them a slice of bread at £4 a pop! Grin

bellinisurge · 07/02/2019 20:47

Ignore and don't discuss any more with them.

AdoraBell · 07/02/2019 23:55

Ignore and when next they mention it say - oh yes, you are right, I’ve seen the light and we’ve eaten all it. That should stop then expecting you to bail them out if everything does goes pear shaped.

twofingerstoEverything · 08/02/2019 06:50

The first rule of stockpiling club is: you do not TALK abut stockpiling. The second rule of stockpiling club is: you do NOT talk about stockpiling.

I’m always puzzled by those who share controversial information and are then surprised that others mock, laugh or get annoyed. If I do it, I’m prepared to defend my opinions, if I’m not, I don’t share.
That includes my Brexit stash, and my secret crushes.

Oldtiger · 08/02/2019 07:19

I’m intrigued here- what items have you stockpiled?!!

bellinisurge · 08/02/2019 07:21

Family member 1 to family member 2: we don't need to worry about things running a bit short, op has stuff.
Family member 2 to friend A: we don't worry about running short, op has stuff ha ha!😂
Friend A to Acquaintance B: don't worry about food running short, apparently op has some. Y'know op who lives on [insert address].
Acquaintance B to Unknown C: y'know if it actually goes bumpy ,which I don't think it will, obviously, op has a load of stuff . Y'know, op who lives at [insert address].

But it'll be fine. People are always respectful and courteous when they don't get the food they are used to. Confused

MymymyLinda · 08/02/2019 07:26

Yes, I want to know what you are stockpiling too. Is there a theory behind the goods you have chosen?

bellinisurge · 08/02/2019 07:29

Ok. For the last time :

Imagine you are snowed in for three days. What will you and your family actually eat? Get freezer friendly and/or shelf stable versions of that. What are your hygiene needs - toothpaste, sanpro, shampoo etc. Make-up too if it makes you feel good.
Think about snacks and treats. And entertainment. Because being stuck indoors is boring.
Why 3 days? It's doable and storable and keeps you away from the shops while you suss out how things are locally. Want to do more? Plenty of advice on MN.

Maykid · 08/02/2019 07:36

I have bought things that I would buy anyway with long dates to cover any possible shortages in the shops after a no deal Brexit. Just as a cushion so to speak.
To clarify, my family who snigger live in the house with me, I have told no one outside of the home.

bellini I've said it before on threads- your patience and advice is admirable.
Even if people don't believe in stockpiling, don't believe that there will be shortages, where's the harm in having some bits in just in case?

If you are on a low income, between now and the end of March, can you add an extra tin of Aldi soup to your shopping each week; or a bag of pasta and tin of tomatoes.
Just enough to give you an extra meal's food security.

TheoriginalLEM · 08/02/2019 07:40

Whenever there have been supply issues in the past, it has generally been exacerbated by stock piling.

HappyPunky · 08/02/2019 07:43

Tell them you've given it to the food Bank and don't answer the door if food shortages do happen. They won't be laughing at you if there's not much in the shops or if it's chaos like we get when the shops are shut for one day at Christmas.

If everything turns out fine you can just eat it

bellinisurge · 08/02/2019 07:45

No. [patient sigh]. We currently have a functioning Just in Time system which allows supermarkets the flexibility to cope with steady and gentle adding to your pantry. Last minute shopping is panic buying. Which is different.

HappyPunky · 08/02/2019 07:45

Just saw they live in the house!! Hide any extra you buy

bellinisurge · 08/02/2019 07:47

Which is why that is the last time I will give out that advice which I have been giving for months. I'm a general prepper. You don't have to be.

TheMammothHunters · 08/02/2019 07:51

Flowers bellini

Maykid · 08/02/2019 07:53

Yes I echo 💐

bellinisurge · 08/02/2019 07:55

Thank you. I really appreciate it.

anniehm · 08/02/2019 07:57

Don't take it personally, some people are - it's probably quite sensible! The main reasons why I'm not so concerned are because my cupboards are crammed full anyway and we are fortunate to be able to pay much elevated prices, I'm giving it until March and if no deal even we will be headed to stock up on a few bits - Italian tomatoes and olive oil are my mainstays of cooking!

marytoya · 08/02/2019 08:03

My mother always says that the stock should be in everything, but my husband always laughs at me. When we go shopping, I always take everything with a margin, and he screams why you need so much. But when something ends abruptly, be it shampoo or paper, or something, you can get it all from the same "why so much"
