Stockpiling - best milk?

Any recommendations on the best long life milk to get?
I’ve tried skimmed UHT longlife milk on a friend’s recommendation and it was awful.
I’ve got some powdered and evaporated milk but would like some nice milk for cereal
Thanks

Sidestepping the question sorry, but do you not have any extra room in the freezer?

Personally I loathe any and all long-life milk on cornflakes, I’ve not found anything good Sad

Dodie66 · 02/02/2019 10:23

I’ve got a couple of pints in the freezer but don’t have room for much more because I’ve frozen bread etc I agree about longlife milk in cereals

I prefer reconstituted dried milk on cereal. You may have to change your cereal to one that tastes better with dried milk.

I fully expect to have to give ds something different for breakfast if I can not get milk.he is autistic and likes things just so.

LittlePickleHead · 02/02/2019 10:45

Bit random, but I get lactofree uht for when I go and stay with people (I'm lacto intolerant) and it tastes exactly the same as normal milk.

But it is expensive and not a hugely long shelf life (couple of months I think?)

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 02/02/2019 21:15

The UK is self sufficient in milk. I wouldn't worry about it.

MillytantForceit · 04/02/2019 14:37

Semi-skimmed

You want semi-skimmed UHT

2 for a £ in Poundland.

bellinisurge · 04/02/2019 14:45

I can't bear UHT dairy. Have some nut milk and oat milk (obviously uhtSad) and some powdered milk. Nido (full day) and marvel (skimmed).

UK Dairy statistics:
Number 2721, 20 January 2016

  1. International Trade
There is little overseas trade in liquid milk, but considerable trade in processed products. In 2013, only 1.3% of liquid milk produced in the EU was exported

Table 6 shows that in 2014 the UK had a negative trade balance in butter and cheese, but a positive trade balance in milk & cream

Imports make up a very small proportion of total supply of liquid milk in the UK - 1% of milk available to UK dairies was imported in 2014
However, milk imports have risen from 75 million litres in 2009 to 139 million litres (provisional) in 2014 - i.e. butter, cheese etc.

Beerflavourednipples · 04/02/2019 14:54

I feel like if things were so bad that we had got to a place where we couldn't even buy milk, whether or not the UHT milk on my cereal tasted a bit dodgy would be the least of my worries!

AutumnCrow · 04/02/2019 15:04

As is often repeated on Brexit threads, it will be issues with the supply chain - it could be fuel for the delivery lorries, for example - that could result in temporary shortages.

There are a lot of steps to consider between cow and supermarket chiller, involving power supplies, fuel, safety, availability of transport, storage space, workers, vet certification - plus price points and dairy farm viability in the medium term.

Clavinova · 04/02/2019 15:18

it could be fuel for the delivery lorries
If you think about it logically - if there are hardly any goods coming in to the UK - then there will be plenty of transport, fuel, storage space, workers etc. for the stuff that's already here. Wink

Wait4nothing · 04/02/2019 15:21

I’ve frozen some and stocked up on porridge which you make with water (milk powder in it) and then prescription formula and normal porridge for baby (diary allergies)

bellinisurge · 04/02/2019 15:22

It is absolutely impossible for you to conceive of there being any problems with No Deal? Really?. Not a single one?
This thread isn't suggesting people buy a cow and a pasteurisation unit. It's suggesting they get a bit of milk in just in case.
Is it such a controversial idea to you @Clavinova

Mistigri · 04/02/2019 15:24

You get used to UHT quite quickly (I no longer really notice much difference vs pasteurised!). The colder the better.

Even if milk "shouldn't" be an issue, messing with supply chains will have unpredictable results.

AutumnCrow · 04/02/2019 15:29

I don't eat cereal but take milk in tea and coffee and bake with it. I'm finding the semi-skimmed (green) UHT milk from Asda is ok.

I also use plant milks when DD is home, and they are also ok for cooking, e.g. bechamel sauce, bread.

I am a bit worried, yes - but some of the posters on these threads are either slightly hysterical, ill-informed, or making stuff up because they have an agenda. The more I research for myself, the less worried I become.

OlennasWimple · 04/02/2019 15:34

Look for full fat or semi-skimmed milk

Think about alternative breakfasts that don't need milk (toast and butter) or where UHT milk is less noticeable (scrambled eggs, pancakes)

We can rarely get fresh milk here (not in the UK) and have had to change a few of our eating habits as a result

bellinisurge · 04/02/2019 15:35

Am I being "hysterical " to use your phrase in suggesting people prep for 3 days?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 04/02/2019 15:39

While it might be true that the UK is self sufficient milk this does not take into consideration the way panic buying and shortages happen.

When you go the shops and there are empty shelves and the things you usually buy are not available then people start buying anything that is available, and so they create more shortages. It’s not reasonable, but that’s what happens.

TeddyIsaHe · 04/02/2019 15:42

Ocado do Moo Organic which when chilled I can barely taste the difference between that and fresh. They do whole, semi or skimmed. I keep a couple of cartons in anyway because they’re so useful if I’m knackered or forgot to pick up milk. I’ve ordered extra recently Just In Case.

Clavinova · 04/02/2019 15:43

No, but I think you've said a number of times that you suffer from anxiety in general, and suggesting that people might want to stay inside for 3 days is a bit over the top.

bellinisurge · 04/02/2019 16:04

I've said no such thing.what are you talking about?

AutumnCrow · 04/02/2019 16:08

Oh fgs lay off bellini, will you, clav?

She's be of the nicest posters on MN, kind and sensible, and doesn't deserve your silly digs. I know who I'd rather have as a friend in good times and bad.

Try oat milk, OP. I get Oatly oat milk as it does a lovely foamy one that’s great for frothy drinks. They also do a long life version, but I haven’t tried it.

You might want to try a few different brands to get the one you like, but any of my friends that have tried it, say it tastes more like ‘real’ milk. However I have had dairy for 30yrs so I wouldn’t remember. It has the advantages of not having to be kept in a fridge until opened. Much easier to store.
