UK must negotiate equal voting rights to Germany

I’ve just been watching Maurice Saatchi on the Channel 4 news. He’s proposing we should remain in the EU but we should renegotiate with them on two key points. First, we must ensure that the UK no longer has subordinate voting rights to Germany; and second, we must be allowed to place stricter limits on immigration.

He’s suggested that this approach could be a way to resolve the Brexit deadlock, as it would keep both remainers and leavers happy: remainers because we’d still be in the EU; and leavers because we’d have negotiated some strong concessions.

I’ve no idea how he’d actually achieve this (it basically sounds impossible), but the bit that struck me was when he said that the UK should insist on equal voting rights to Germany. Do we not have this already? Can someone more informed please enlighten me?

Negotiating to stay IN is an idea that has done the rounds before.

There is a new voting system coming in, Germany gets a slightly higher % than UK but UK has lots of eurosceptic allies eg Poland Sweden, Denmark.

I think we could definitely get a pause on EU FOM, as it has affected us far more than most countries and maybe fishing too.

Whether May has the vision for this is another matter or if HoC would accept it ?

newposter 482 Re equal voting rights: Maybe it’s obvious, we have 73 MEPs and Germany has 96 MEPs!
It is not hard to check how many MEPs for each country
We also could have limited immigration from new EU members but our previous prime ministers did not bother! Why?

Germany is the largest contributor to the annual EU budget. It also has a much larger population. Given those two factors, is it entirely surprising that it might be given a slightly higher voting share? Actually, if you factor Germany's vote by the size of the two populations, it has a weaker vote per person than we do.
