Brexit

Do the people who came on and told us not to be so stupid about the food shortages when this was raised months ago want to comment now

I remember there being lots of sniggering and scathing comments about not being so stupid.

OP posts:
StoorieHoose · 28/01/2019 14:29

its still going on! the Brexit cupboard thread highlighted there are many people still scoffing and not listening to experts

bellinisurge · 28/01/2019 14:38

Plenty of new voices (or renamed old ones) scoffing away. And not in a foodie way.

Clavinova · 28/01/2019 16:10

One observation:

The BBC are reporting that in their letter, the British Retail Consortium are quoting, the government's own estimate that freight through Calais may fall 87% from current levels - however, the Ports of Dover and Calais are both saying that they are prepared for Brexit?!

Meanwhile, the ports and logistics companies seem to coming up with new initiatives daily;

Eddie Stobart Logistics has today officially announced the launch of a new rail service from the Port of Tilbury to Daventry

That's right @Clavinova , they are all lying because Theresa May told them to. She has so much power and influence over everything. As evidenced by .... nope, doesn't look like it.

Clavinova · 28/01/2019 16:32

bellinisurge

I didn't say they were lying - the British Retail Consortium are entitled to rely on the information provided to them - I am questioning why the ports of Dover and Calais disagree with the government's estimate of 87% reduced capacity.

bellinisurge · 28/01/2019 16:36

All of which is why I prep and advise others to do the same in a way that suits them and their budget.

Ta1kinPeace · 28/01/2019 17:00

Clavinova
That Stobart link will have a capacity of 200 containers a week
Not much of a dent in the 10,000 lorries a day that use the Channel ports
is it ?

LonelyandTiredandLow · 28/01/2019 17:03

They are prepared for uncertainty circa (16th Jan) as they can't possibly know yet when it will be or which checks may be required. It's dependant on date/whether we are fully on WTO and which checks they require (none of which seem to have been confirmed yet and may not be for up to 7 months) and then the fact we will be a 3rd country so increased checks will be necessary - UNLESS TM agrees some kind of deal for a few months extra. If we drop out all of this becomes an immediate issue.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 28/01/2019 17:07

Do you see any firm guarantees anywhere in that statement that all will be exactly the same with no delays at all? Hmm
Nope, they are issuing the usual hot air that really says nothing that you can hold them to.

donquixotedelamancha · 28/01/2019 17:19

In their defence, I don't think any reasonable person thought TM could fuck things up this much and remain in power.

surferjet · 28/01/2019 18:05

We’ll be short of lettuce & tomatoes for a few weeks ......OMG 😱

Apileofballyhoo · 28/01/2019 18:07

Ah surfer, do you really think it's just lettuces and tomatoes come in from abroad?

PerverseConverse · 28/01/2019 18:09

I see the aliens have returned the real surferjet

bellinisurge · 28/01/2019 18:10

I won't @surferjet , because I grow perpetual spinach which works as lettuce and I have preserved a lot of last year's crop of tomatoes.
But I think there is more than just salads for people to worry about.

BollocksToBrexit · 28/01/2019 18:13

A week or so ago Channel 4 News talked to the head of customs at Dover and he certainly didn't say they were prepared. Quite the contrary. He said they had around 20 customs officers as opposed to the 200 that worked there pre EU. He said that it takes 5 years to train new inspectors and as far as he was aware there was nothing in the pipeline to address this. He also said that most customs officials are trained in the EU so he's was at a complete loss as to what they were expected to do post brexit.

NorthEndGal · 28/01/2019 18:16

If it makes you feel better OP, 99% of mumsnet spent the last 13 years making fun of me for being a prepper, and I live in Canada, in areas that get cut off a lot! I have needed to use them more than once.

No matter how much you explain to people about why you might want to be ready for life, someone will always scoff, and imply you are stupid and fearful.
Funny enough, its those same people who pay pet insurance/wear sestbelts/ buy fire extinguishers / life insurance with no qualms

BollocksToBrexit · 28/01/2019 18:19

He also showed a pile of paperwork approx 10 cm thick and explained that this was the customs declaration for one lorry and would take around 2 hours to process. UCL research shows that post brexit anything over 80 seconds processing time will result in an 'unrecoverable situation'.

Prepared? Only if you believe in unicorns.

Have you actually read the letter?

It's pretty clear. Shame the right hand margin isn't justified but otherwise a pretty clearly drafted letter.

That surprises me unless it was a 100 part groupage - which is relatively rare.
One C88 per consignment and each C88 takes about 20 minutes to clear

JarndyceVersusJarndyce · 28/01/2019 18:44

I doubt any of them will admit they were wrong.

Mistigri · 28/01/2019 18:47

Most of them won't admit they are wrong even when the only thing they have left to eat is humble pie.

Mrskeats · 28/01/2019 18:48

No point in engaging with surfer
She obvs knows much more than the ceo of Tesco etc.

lonelyplanetmum · 28/01/2019 18:50

Yup obvs Surfer knows more than Tesco.

Boris Johnson knows more about car manufacturing than the Jaguar Land Rover CEO.

derxa · 28/01/2019 18:52

These threads make me irrationally annoyed and I can't work out why. I voted Remain and definitely don't want No Deal.
