Advice on applying for an Irish passport

Maybe posting in the wrong place, if so, sorry.
Is the only way to get an irish passport, as an eligible applicant living in England, to post all my very important documents to Cork? Is there no check and send service at the Irish embassy in London/can I do it in London? Or alternatively I’ll be in Belfast in April, can I do it there(I think not). I can’t find the answers I need on line and am still waiting for an email response. Anyone on here done this and can advise? Thank you.

Are you actually Irish? So doing a passport renewal or applying for an Irish passport as a British subject?
I have to say I find it so highly annoying the amount of British people who have applied for Irish passports post Brexit.
Firstly Brexit is your problem, you (a democratic majority) caused it, you have to suffer the consequences!! It’s a joke that now non-Irish people, who have never lived here, know nothing about our culture or language are going to be considered citizens and seen as Irish around the world just because you still want to be able to do your two weeks in Spain!!!
As you can tell it boils my blood Smile

I always send my documentation to the Irish embassy in London when renewing my Irish passport. Details on the website if you say you're applying from the UK.

Playingfootball · 26/01/2019 18:09

littleheart, born in Belfast, parents born in Belfast, grandparents born in Belfast, great grandparents born in Belfast, great great grandparents born in Belfast......lived there until I was 7. Go back to visit family most years. Does that make me Northern Irish enough (despite my British passport)? Besides which DH is Eastern European. We could get passports in his nationality, but Irish was easier. So it’s not for 2 weeks in Spain, it’s for DC to visit their grandparents.

And does it boil your blood that Irish people living in Britain will continue to be able to do so no problem post Brexit?

I had the same dilemma 10 days ago, I read and re-read the website and it definitely says to post to the Cork address. I can only imagine the Embassy in London is just snowed under at the moment and are only doing the "in person due to travel with 6 weeks" applications now. I sent it all off via international tracked & signed for post so I know it has arrived safely. No news from the passport office itself though so waiting nervously to get some very important original documents back safely.

And btw to PP, passport applications for 3 DDs born in Dublin with Irish father if that's ok with you? Hmm

Apileofballyhoo · 26/01/2019 19:00

What's the problem about posting them to Cork? Do you not trust Royal Mail or something?

Playingfootball · 26/01/2019 19:06

apileo. No, in a word, I don’t. Nor do I trust the inundated system at the other end to get all the documents back to me.

I applied in person in London in November - there were loads of free appointments and only two others in the waiting room when I arrived (one lost passport and one collection). Unless things have changed drastically you shouldn’t have any trouble getting an appointment as there were loads of free slots when I booked. I was travelling within 6 weeks, but wasn’t asked for any proof etc. I was able to bring my British passport home after they photocopied it and just left my form and birth certificate - I would definitely recommend that route!

Minniemagoo · 26/01/2019 19:09

The 'problem' is that this is I assume your first application, if it was a renewal you could go to the embassy. You do need to send them to Cork and may have a bit of a wait. They are very busy right now (surprise!).

Apileofballyhoo · 26/01/2019 19:10

Have there been cases of Cork passport office not sending things back?

Playingfootball · 26/01/2019 19:11

lurker was yours a new application or a renewal?

Lurker, Your documents (birth cert and form) will have been sent to Cork. You do not need to enclose your British Passport for NI applicants (at least my friend didnt have to, her husband accidentally sent his and is still waiting for it back, nearly 2 months later!)

lurker101 · 26/01/2019 19:22

Yes mine was a first time passport (otherwise I would have applied online for renewal). My understanding was that passport/driving licence needed posted as current photo ID which was why I did it in person. As it meant I was able to travel home for Christmas without risking the Irish passport/documents not arriving in time

WaxMyBalls · 27/01/2019 15:05

As an Irish citizen, I think people whose blood is boiling at other people exercising their rights under Irish nationality law are pathetic.

Oblomov19 · 27/01/2019 15:38

New application. We went to London for Dh to apply for his first. His father (passed away) was Irish. Booked his appointment online. Was easy.

BritInUS1 · 27/01/2019 15:46

My brother took his documents to Cork to get his

Bobojangles · 27/01/2019 15:59

You can use passport express in Liverpool or Glasgow www.dfa.ie/passports-citizenship/passport-express/ (I did it in Liverpool) very straight forward, theyllcheck your application is ok and send it off swcurely

To do it in Belfast you need to live in Ireland - not sure if you can get away with using your parent address!

Bobojangles · 27/01/2019 16:03

Mine was a renewal with change of name, also a new application for my baby - both where back before my hubby's British passport application but this was last year

Scandaloso · 27/01/2019 16:03

Oh stop your bloody moaning. Sick of little Irelanders like you.

As an Irish person I would actively encourage any Remain voters who are eligible for an Irish passport to apply for one.

Leave voters who are thinking of doing this, I wish you a lifelong bout of cystitis.

BowBeau · 27/01/2019 16:09

You need to apply for citizenship before you can apply for a passport. Unless you or your parent were born there.

corlan · 27/01/2019 16:17

You don't have to use the post. I handed my application in to the passport office in Cromwell Road,London two weeks ago. They said if I could wait half an hour someone could check it for me, but I didn't have time.

Bobojangles · 27/01/2019 20:00

OP was born in Belfast 🙄

Bobojangles · 27/01/2019 20:01

That should have been @BowBeau

We want to get our DC their Irish passports (dh is Irish, born in Waterford, grandparents still there, my parents voted leave, I'll admit its mostly to wind them up)
I'm confused by the section where the photo needs to be validated by someone with an official stamp, grandparents keep telling us it needs to be a policeman, we've tried to explain it doesn't work like that here, not like popping down to the local gardai... Who did any of you use for first applications? I'm just stuck at that, and obviously where to send it all, I guess it would be his documents we would send, but unfortunately he needs his passport on a weekly basis, for work. Can't have it sent away with a backlog.. 🤔No rush for it all, but I'd just prefer them to have it ready for visits over.
