Will it be panic stations in the shops from now on?

After the vote tonight do you think the shops will be busier with people buying extra and potentially stockpiling food and household supplies?

Will fuel prices increase?

I've started to buy extras but not a stockpile by any stretch. Just a full freezer and cupboard.

Some people looked at me askance when I spoke of buying extra but others said they were doing the same.

Are you more worried now than you were before?

No

spidermantimetravel · 15/01/2019 23:12

Yes, I’m worried about a no deal brexit. What incentive does the Eu have for renegotiating? None. How likely is it that there will be another referendum, won by remain? Very slim. I’m scared

AtSea1979 · 15/01/2019 23:12

No not at all.

Somerville · 15/01/2019 23:12

Given that Paddy Power have 12/1 for
UK Government to officially announce food rationing in 2019 Then yes, I imagine more people will start stocking up.

NoSuchThingAsAlpha · 15/01/2019 23:17

I've been buying a few extra of our favourite non-essential long-life / non-perishable things just to keep us going if supplies are temporarily interrupted. I think we'll be fine for the basics, but I can imagine some low-priority items will be a bit harder to find in stock for a while if we do end up crashing out.

PerverseConverse · 15/01/2019 23:22

I wonder how rationing would work in this day and age? I don't know how it worked back then to be fair. Things are so different to the 1940s now. Shopping habits have changed so much as local shops have disappeared. I live in a small semi rural town. We used to have 3 greengrocers but now have one. There was a fishmongers when I was a little girl in the late 70s/early 80s. There's still 2 butchers. One smallish Asda, a hardware shop, and independent bakers. How do you ration things in a supermarket??

Will nobody think of the avocados? (Pearl clutching swoon).

Somerville · 15/01/2019 23:26

I presume there would be some kind of ID card in a credit card format with data uploaded. There were all kinds of rumours that this had been planned around the time A50 was triggered. I didn’t give them much credence at the time and still think proper rationing is unlikely. Less food on shelves/higher prices is what I’m hedging against, any I’m especially stocking up on the specialist foods for the members of my family with severe allergies.

Stardustinmyeyes · 15/01/2019 23:28

Yes there will definitely be panic buying where I live, snow is forecast for Friday. So the main supermarket will be stripped of bread and milk.

PerverseConverse · 15/01/2019 23:31

@Stardustinmyeyes us too. No bread or milk to be found when the beast from the east hit last year so I've made sure I got enough after I saw the forecast for the next week.

Like Somerville, my biggest worry is our family members with severe allergies. Both for their life saving medicines and food that is safe for them.

blackcat86 · 15/01/2019 23:49

I've made sure that we have plenty of food in. I've started buying extra cat food and baby stuff as whilst me and DH can be a bit flexible with what with have, it's not fair on them to not have basics in the event of shortages. I've slowly had a little stock of asthma inhalers going although this is mostly because I'm on mat leave so get them for free and because unlike some other meds I take, it would be life threatening to not have them.

Hopefully people have been following the sensible suggestions on here of slowly building up you pantry in manageable and affordable bits over the past few weeks (well, months, actually).
There are loads of non-panicky threads on this already .
Spoiler alert, here's some advice: imagine being snowed in for three days. What do you actually want to eat and what hygiene stuff do you need - toothpaste, sanpro etc? Focus on shelf stable and freezable versions of stuff you and your household actually eat.
Think about snacks and treats. Think about entertainment. Think about pets if you have them.
Three days is a reasonable amount that people can envisage. It can be a start if you want more (and can afford it), it can be considerably better than nothing. It also gives you a chance, if things get bumpy at the shops for a bit, not to actually have to go to the shops. You can suss out your local area calmly without worrying about how the hell you are to feed your family for the next 72 hours.
Only you know what works for you.

I have trotted this advice out on these threads for months now and it seems to have prompted people to think carefully and sensibly.
I'm a prepper. These are my tips. You don't have to Become a Prepper- prepping, in this circumstance, is just a buzz word like hack or upcycle. Some journalists have started calling it a hamster list - what it's called in Germany.
I don't give a shit how you voted. Head over to the Preppers topic for some sensible budget friendly advice. But, frankly, there's plenty of other threads now.
No need to panic. There is need to think about it.
PS not having partners on board is totally normal.

PerverseConverse · 16/01/2019 07:29

@bellinisurge you and I know there's no need to panic but was wondering if others will be now panicking.

There shouldn’t be because that would be stupid

costacoffeecup · 16/01/2019 07:34

Meh I'm having a baby next week and I'm planning to go and stock up on formula jsut in case. I think that may be one of the first things people 'panic' buy. It's a self fulfilling prophecy, people will start doing it now just in case everyone else does.

Unbelievable it's coming to this really and we voted for it ourselves.

bellinisurge · 16/01/2019 07:39

No need to panic if you have been building up your pantry sensibly over the past few weeks. Which is what most sceptics have been doing.

NeverTwerkNaked · 16/01/2019 08:10

I was worrying I was being neurotic by prepping (but justified it because of children’s allergies) but from a WhatsApp chat last night it appears all my family have been doing the same (and some of them are close enough to the senior layers of the political world/ civil service to really have their finger on the pulse).

We have time to plan, so no one needs tonpanic even if they haven’t started yet. But I would be slowly and calmly building up a supply of things to last at least a few days. Even if you buy just a couple of extra bits with each weekly shop you will have a decent amount by the end of March.

Deadsouls · 16/01/2019 08:11

Only if people start panic buying and creating a panic situation

NeverTwerkNaked · 16/01/2019 08:14

There’s 2 months to go. No one needs to panic buy. Just slowly add an extra item or two to their trolley each time they shop.
