E11 EU health card

Hopefully someone can answer this.

I live in NI, have an Irish passport and and E11 card (are they still called that, the eu health card).

After Brexit would this card still work for me as an EU citizen or is it based on your address. Hence living in NI being part of UK and therefore not eligible for an EU health card?

It's one of my many curiosities about Brexit. I think there will be many issues regarding the border between the north and south that won't be thought of until someone raises it after Brexit

To get one from the Irish government you have to supply for PPS number. The Irish version of a National Insurance number. Do you have one?

GiantKitten · 15/01/2019 01:02

It’s called EHIC now. As an Irish passport holder (lucky thing Envy) you will still be entitled to one.

GiantKitten · 15/01/2019 01:04

At least I think you will...

It works on a reciprocal basis, everybody is supposed to receive medical treatment as if they’re a citizen of whichever country they’re visiting, but I don’t know how that works financially Confused

confuddeledconfuddel · 15/01/2019 03:00

@Inniu I don't have one but I can easily get one by getting employment. Lots of people travel over the border for work so is not unusual. In fact I have been looking into changing my job to a similar one over the border but awaiting Brexit to see what happens

@GiantKitten it is confusing when you think about it, isn't it!

Another query I wonder, lots of friends/family currently travel over the border every day for work and many people travel over the border very frequently for leisure, be it walks/meals/nights out/shopping
Will we all now need travel insurance to go to work/shopping? And 3rd country travel insurance at that?

I would wait and see. AFAIK Ireland and NI have some reciprocal health arrangements independent of the EU.

Mistigri · 15/01/2019 10:23

EHIC rights are based on country of residence not nationality.

That said, it's possible that there will be some workaround for NI residents and maybe other EU citizens resident in the U.K. (including Irish). I can't see the French for eg abandoning their citizens in the U.K. in the way that the U.K. govt has abandoned their citizens in France.

I would always get travel insurance anyway, brexit or not it's cheap and good to have.

Thanks for that - I was wondering!

Does anybody know how the reciprocal financing works? Do all the EU countries bill each other for excess funding?

confuddeledconfuddel · 15/01/2019 14:01

@Gaballout I have yearly travel insurance anyway. It's just curiosity what way things will work.

I'm of to Spain in sept. I currently have an 8 week old who will also be getting an Irish passport. Is it worth applying for EHIC card for her now? As it will be UK EHIC card.

I agree, but it’s a bit different when you’re back & forth on a regular basis all year round. Unless you get backpackers cover (or even then?) there are time limits.

From what Mistigri says, it’s impossible to know at this stage!

Until the end of March nobody on the planet KNOWS what the situation will be as so much of the fine detail depends on the Brexit outcome. Countries have said what they intend to do but there is a fair chance it will need amending before long.

confuddeledconfuddel · 15/01/2019 14:37

Thanks everyone. I hate Brexit! Invited to stay but I don't really care we are leaving. What I care about is nobody has a frigging clue what is going to happen. You would think this would needed to have been sorted before voting on it!

You'll need to check that your insurance policy covers healthcare in the EU as in the past the assumption has been that the ehic would cover most emergency care so travel insurance was only required for repatriation and uninsured medical costs.
